@shaxyra, I do not understand your question po. Are you planning to submit your works to both the poetry competition and the workshop application?

So you're saying that you're planning to submit POEMS to the poetry competition and submit the SAME POEMS as part of your workshop application?

Hmmm... well so far it isn't in the rules that you couldn't but I humbly suggest that you don't... to avoid any possible complications later on.

But hey up to you. I hope I answered your question that I think you were asking.

@shaxyra, you never know unless you try. This will be good exercise and experience for you. Have some heart and be courageous. Fortune favors the brave.

If you are still not confident to at least try, then you should prepare for next year. Life is short, youth is shorter.

And if you really want to be a writer,  please remember to complete the words in your sentences be these in English, Filipino or in Bisaya. Good practice makes good habits.

The Magsaysay greatness of spirit lives
((2007 is for remembering Ramon Magsaysay))

    BE PART OF HISTORY.

Calling all secondary and college students: the 5th Ramon Magsaysay Student Essay Competition (RMSEC) Philippines is on! The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) invites high school and college students to take part in the birth centenary celebrations of the late Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay by participating in the contest.

Read and research on the lives, work and dreams accomplished by Asia's modern-day heroes and heroines - the Magsaysay awardees. They manifest the life of dignity and selfless service long associated with the much-loved president. President Ramon Magsaysay, well loved by his people and was admired worldwide, was born on August 31, 1907 and died in a tragic plane crash on March 17, 1957. He barely completed his astounding term as the youngest President of the Philippines. His genuine concern for the people and his exemplary leadership skills inspired the creation of Asia's premiere prize, the Ramon Magsaysay Award.

By immersing themselves in these fine gems of humanity, students will discover inspiring subjects for the essay competition's theme, "The Magsaysay Awardee Who Inspires Me Most: the Magsaysay Greatness of Spirit Lives". Missionaries and military leaders, farmers, housewives and heads of government, great minds of science and gifted and socially-driven artists, a rice research body and an international relief agency are among Asia's living heroes. According to RMAF president Carmencita Abella, the essay writing competition is a Foundation crusade to animate the young generation to want to demonstrate the same selfless leadership in their own lives.

Students may surf the Foundation website - www.rmaf.org.ph - or visit its Asian Library.

There is an array of available publications offering invaluable data to researchers. The Book of Record, a continuing compilation of the biographies of the awardees from 1958 when the first awards were given and is now on its 14th volume, are available in selected libraries nationwide.

Co-published with Anvil Publishing Inc are two popular books, "Great Men and Women of Asia"(GMWA) and "Young Pens For Young Minds". GMWA Volumes 1 to 5 capture the riveting and remarkable lives and work of Magsaysay Awardees. "Young Pens" anthologizes a selection of winning essays in the first four years of the Ramon Magsaysay Student Essay Competition (RMSEC), three in the Philippines from 2000 - 2003 and a maiden run in Korea in 2004. The two books are at affordable prices at all National Bookstores and Powerbooks outlets nationwide, including Solidaridad gift shops, Tradewinds, Libros Filipino and Bookmark. All these reference materials are also at the Asian Library.

All entries must be original, written in English, with an estimated length of 2 - 4 pages or 500 - 1,000 words in length. Deadline for submission is on August 10, 2007. All participants are required to register online via www.rmaf.org.ph; secondary school principals and university/college registrars of participating students must also endorse online the students' participation. Essays may be emailed to rsmsec5phil@gmail.com.

For competition mechanics, other information and technical assistance, please contact the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation at 521-3166 to 81 or toll free 1-800-1-888-2390.

Entries are classified into regional clusters: National Capital Region, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. From each cluster, one collegiate and one high school finalist will be selected. The two national winners (high school and collegiate) will be selected from the eight regional finalists.

Prizes include P50,000 each for two national grand prize winners, and personal computers for regional winners. adelacruz@rmaf.org.ph

PHILPOST LAUNCHES INTERNATIONAL LETTER-WRITING CONTEST ON ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PhilPost) and the Universal Postal Union (UPU) based in Berne, Switzerland has recently launched the 36th International Letter Writing Competition for young people to promote better understanding around the world through the post office. This year's competition was aimed in making the public aware of the significance of the polar regions to the earth's climate, and ultimately the environment.

In cooperation with the Department of Education (DepED), the competition will focus on the theme "Imagine you are a wild animal whose habitat is threatened by environmental or climate change. Write a letter to the people of the world, explaining to them what they can do to help you survive. "

The 1st prize winning entry on the National level will automatically qualify for the UPU Int'l letter writing competition to be held in Switzerland.

Postmaster General Hector R.R. Villanueva said that students or out-of-school youth who are citizens of the Philippines and not more than (15) years old are qualified to join the contest. The compositions must be recent and original letter in English - between 500 to 1,000 words in length, handwritten or typewritten. On a separate sheet of paper, the participant must indicate the number of words of the letter composition, complete name and address, gender of candidate, age and date of birth, 2x2 colored ID picture, name of school and address, grade level, and contact numbers.

The First Prize winner will receive P15,000, Second Prize-P10,000, Third Prize-P5,000 plus other recognitions. The competition is also a way of making the young people aware of the important role that postal service plays in our societies, to foster affection for writing letters even though other modern means of communication exists, such as mobile phones and the Internet.

For more information regarding the contest please call Alvin Fidelson or Ms. Joy Edralin-Cacho of the PhilPost Marketing Office at Tel. Default Istoryan Writers: Why I write what I write.

    My Writing.

    Or

Why I write what I write Part One.

We are who we are. An often-enough 'negative' aspect of our own identities is that we possess preferences, otherwise known as biases and prejudices. Each of our lives can be summarily described in two equal yet opposing categories: what we like and what we don't like.

The same goes with what I do which is writing. Though I consider myself somewhat flexible and versatile as a writer, I do have my preferences to the materials I want to produce. This is itself is a strong declaration of my being a writer, as well as being an individual.

Please allow me to share to you, why I write what I write but let me begin with those that I don't like to write.

    1. NEWS ARTICLES. I have a profound respect for journalists. In general, I revere people who make it their passion to find events, record the actual truth of the particulars without subject to personal views and deliver these to the people who will determine its relevance in their lives, both present and future.

Journalists are members of a noble (and sadly, often taken-for-granted) profession, but they are they and they are not me.

To be quick about it, I am the kind of person who wants to be 'making news' rather than the person who is' writing news'.

    2. ESSAYS. I personally define essays to be well-worded opinions and arguments of topics that are personally important to the writer. Reading and writing essays can lead to understanding of others and of oneself.

I appreciate short essays which are direct to the point and concise with its thoughts. Too long-winded an essay is like an appointment with a dentist whose only cure for any tootache is a drill. It's boring.

I have my opinions and I know you have yours. An essay is, really for me, a one-sided conversation.

I have two pieces of advice to writers who prefer essays, feature articles and reviews (both raves and rants):

    A) The average human has an average attention span of 20 minutes maximum, 15 seconds minimum~ please always keep that in mind when writing.

    B) Please do not put too much negative emotions in your opinions. If you do, prepare for some retaliation. It is coming, that is a given.

    3. POETRY. I figure one doesn't necessarily have to understand everything about something to appreciate its existence, and the beauty of it. Do we really need to know why the sky is blue, or why there are rainbows or why pandas are so darn cute?

The same goes with me and poetry. I do not understand it, but I sure love reading it.

Reading it, yes but writing it, no. N-O. No.

I have to understand what I write or how else can I make you understand what I write?

There is a certain casual freedom of form and will when it comes to writing poetry that it seems there is no form at all. A poem could be just random thoughts, that can allude to meaning 'something', 'everything' or 'nothing' at all.

So, reading a poem is open season for interpretation. And that, frankly, intimidates me.

I do not have to understand this fear to appreciate that it exists for me, I do not enjoy writing poetry, just not my thing or my cup of tea.

    4. BLOGS, JOURNALS. In truth, I am a private person and do not feel comfortable of sharing key details of my life with any stranger. To bare it all, can leave one feeling naked and utterly vulnerable.

But in these times, it can be considered good PR to hold and maintain a blog or an online journal.

Considering that, I would in the future write a blog, not about me being me, but about being a writer. Just that part and not the whole enchilada.

    *******

This ends Part One of my essay. I will continue Part 2 sharing why I write what I write with an actual example.

To those who are curious as to why I am cutting short this discussion, all I can say is I follow my own advice~ faithfully. [Remember, Essay Advice(A)?]

For your consideration. To be continued~
