    UV blasts UC

    By Rommel C. Manlosa
    Tuesday, September 11, 2012

FROM the looks of it, nine-time champions the University of the Visayas Green Lancers are bound to return to the finals, after reducing the two-time defending champions University of Cebu Webmasters to a mediocre squad following a clinical 79-45 bashing at the start of the semifinal round of the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Basketball Tournament held at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

In the high school game, two-time runner-up Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles were also showing their serious titular bid after scoring a 77-60 win over the 2010 champions Cebu Eastern College Dragons.

The Eagles held CEC to just two points in the first quarter then went to Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw who scored 13 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter to hold the red- hot charge of the Dragons.

At one point, the Webmasters were giving the Lancers a hard time, holding the opponents’ charges for few minutes before all hell broke loose.

Tied at 2-all early, Kim Gomez sank his field goal to give UC a 5-2 start. But UC could only hang on to the lead for three minutes before UV broke the game wide open.

Steve Cedrick Akomo ignited the Lancers’ 16-3 run with a one-handed slam to give UV a 21-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

UC managed to cut down UV’s lead to a single digit for the next three minutes but the Lancers again outscored the Webmasters, 16-10, to close the first half carrying a 39-24 lead.

Then UC’s nightmare came when UV’s full court trap started to break their offense, resulting to a crippling 26-4 run that towed the Lancers to a 65-28 lead for good.

UC scored only seven points while UV started fielding its second and third stringers in the last three minutes of the penultimate period.

But even with UV playing with its second and third stringers the rest of the way, UC just could not come up with the right answers.

Wily point guard John Abad scored 14 points for UV, while Wowie Escocio and Phil Mercader each had 12 points. No UC player scored in double digits with Kevin Quilantang topscoring with nine points.

Green Lancers crush defending champions Webmasters; Magis Eagles rout Dragons

    By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 7:13 am | Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers feasted on the overall ineptitude of the reigning champions University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters to gain ground in the semifinals with a 79-45 win yesterday in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Last year’s juniors runners-up Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles also started their campaign for a berth in the finals on a right note as they leaned on a quick start and a spectacular finishing kick provided by all-star guard Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw to down the Cebu Eastern College Dragons, 77-60, in juniors action.

With the semis being a single round-robin affair, the Green Lancers wasted no time in asserting themselves as they took control of the lead with a 16-3 blast in the opening canto that turned a, 5-7 deficit into a 21-10 lead. From then on, it was easy pickings for UV as they steadily increased their lead to 15 at halftime 39-24, and then, 37, 68-31, heading to the final stanza.

The Lancers virtually shut down UC’s vaunted offense by hounding the Webmasters’ main weapon Brian Heruela all-night long. The “Lone Star” guard finished with a paltry eight points as nobody on the squad finished in double-figures.

UV, on the other hand, was paced by the 14 of John Abad. Wowie Escosio and Phil Mercader each had 12 points.

    COBRAS VS JAGUARS

SWU, USJR tangle in crucial Cesafi semifinal showdown
    By Jonas Panerio

Cebu Daily News 7:10 am | Thursday, September 13th, 2012

    Games today (Cebu Coliseum) SEMIFINALS
    5 p.m. – UV vs. CIT-U (Jrs.)
    6:30 p.m. – SWU vs. USJ-R (Srs.)

THE Southwestern University Cobras embark on a long journey which they hope will end with a championship berth but find their way blocked by the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars as the two powerhouse squads meet today in the semifinals of the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

It has been a season of discontent for last year’s runners-up, the Cobras, which ended the preliminary round with an even 3-3 record, a far cry from the visions of dominance pundits had for them before the season started. Interestingly, all three losses come from the very same teams that are in the semifinal round.

SWU will try to pay one team back in USJ-R today especially after the Jaguars pulled the rug from under them, 72-80, in their lone meeting in the elimination round. The Cobras led by 10 in the third period of that match only to get out-muscled and out-hustled down the stretch by the reserves of the Jaguars.

The good news for SWU today though is the expected return of star rookie forward, Cameroonian, Ben Mbala, who missed the all-star game last weekend because of a knee injury he suffered in the quarterfinals. Mbala, along with fellow national, Justin Aboude, will have their work cut out for them as they do battle against the talented frontcourt of USJ-R, namely Abulaiz Sulaiman and Miguel Tabaloc.

In the juniors division, the defending champions, University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, look to continue their mastery of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University in their semis game today. UV bested CIT-U, 86-77, in the prelims with league MVP, Paul Desiderio, scoring a whopping 40 points.

    UV in finals
    By Rommel C. Manlosa

    Saturday, September 15, 2012

THE University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers lost an 18-point second quarter lead then struggled before booking a seat to the finals with a breathtaking 84-76 win over the Southwestern University Cobras (SWU) in the semifinal round of the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) College Basketball tournament held at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

In the other collegiate game, defending champions University of Cebu Webmasters turned to the hot-shooting Kim Gomez, who sank four triples for his 21 points, and the unstoppable Quinton Brian Heruela, who finished with the game high 25 points, to keep their hopes alive while eliminating the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars, 72-64.

In the high school division, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles will return for its third try to win a Cesafi title after scoring an easy 70-49 win over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildkittens, while defending champions UV Baby Lancers had an easy 71-57 win over the Cebu Eastern College Dragons.

Today, the Dragons will try to salvage a chance to get to the finals via backdoor as they play the Wildkittens in the opening game at 1 p.m.; SHS-AdC will try to stay unbeaten before the finals as they play the Baby Lancers at 2:45 p.m.

UC and SWU will face a crucial match that will determine the second finalist at 4:30 p.m., while UV takes on USJ-R in the main game at 6:15.

After allowing SWU to score the first four points of the game, UV slowly took control of the game and closed the first quarter with a 15-2 run for a 23-15 lead.

The second quarter was very trying for the Cobras and UV capitalized on this moment to build the biggest lead of the game at 44-26 before SWU scored the last three points of the first half.

SWU came out from the break strong as they started with a quicker squad and coach Raul Alcoseba used his favorite three-guard rotation.

“Ni collapse mi. Na-complacent akong mga big men kay nisabay man sila sa quickness sa SWU. Gipasagdan lang nako sila kay salig ko sa akong mga players. Kahibawo ko nga mo-deliver gyud,” UV coach Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr. told Sun.Star Cebu after the game.

UV managed to keep the lead in the third quarter but it did not take long for SWU to take it back. Monbert Arong sank a triple at the 5:42 mark that gave the Cobras a 65-63 lead.

But UV had Jerome Silva to count on, and he took the scoring cudgel by sinking three triples. SWU also leaned on Monbert Arong, who had two treys, and Bernie Bregondo on the inside as the game went to four lead changes and two deadlocks for the next 3:40.

Then the big blow came when Emmanuel Calo stole the ball that led to reserve center Chris Perolino’s basket at the other end. Perolino added a back-breaking triple in the final 62 seconds of the game that secured the win for UV.
