They actually built the thing but then Tesla got conned by JP Morgan himself who promised finance Tesla's work but was eventually the one responsible for shutting down his projects. Anyway the tower worked similarly to what radio towers do. Instead of using hundreds of electric posts in one city and thousands of wires to distribute electric current around you only had to build one Tesla tower in a particular area (or even one tower for the entire world) and that's about it - free energy. It was mentioned in Nikola Tesla's bio that they planted lightbulbs attached to metal rods on the ground and it would light up.
