Well, we should start with scrapping the protectionist economic provisions of the 1987 constitution and allow 100% FDI at all economic sectors as a much as possible like Poland and Chile did to jump start our economy.

But, you can always hope and pray that we can "conservatively" gain while keeping blatantly protectionist policies in the constitution--like we've always had, for the past several decades.

Also, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia all joined the WTO during its creation. Yet you see very contrasting economies. Using China as a relative to the Philippines isn't even fair.
In other words brad you were saying, in every baby steps the Philippine economy is advancing, our south east asian neighbors are already going in leaps and bounds! Sakto ba ko?

I've read some posts saying that ngano among the strongest performing economy man pero walay kalambuan sa kinabuhi sa mga tao? Well, a good performing economy doesn't necessarily mean that everybody or at least the majority of the people are having good lives.

Here's the logic: Most people put their money in savings accounts that give only 1% (at most) growth per year and the standing inflation rate is 3%. So how could people's lives get better when in fact their "savings" are not really growing at all and in fact are decreasing at a rate of 2% per year?

The stock market (PSE), one of the barometers of economic performance, is doing well. There is a huge inflow of cash coming from foreign firms (thanks to the struggling economies of Europe and the Americas). But with it, statistics show that there's only a little over 500,000 stock trading accounts which accounts to more or less 0.5% of the whole Filipino population. The PSE has an average historical growth of 17% per year which leads savings accounts (1%) and other bank accounts as well as fixed income securities (around 5% on average).

In other countries, people line up to buy shares of stocks of companies, in the Philippines, people line up to buy lotto tickets. Apparently, there's significantly something wrong with the financial IQs of most Filipinos hence keeping them from moving forward with the economy.

If China has growth of 8.1 percent and the Philippines has growth of 6.4 percent how did this expert conclude that we are the best performing economy in Asia? Maybe he meant best improved economy.

The Philippines, which is batting for a six to seven percent growth rate this year, is off to a good start when it posted 6.4 percent expansion in the first quarter, the third fastest in the region next only to China and Sri Lanka.

Second quarter growth figures will be released by Aug. 31 and officials are hoping it would exceed the first quarter result.

The Aquino administration has targeted a growth of up to 8.5 percent at the end of its term by 2016.
