ANTIPOLO CITY, Rizal, Philippines -- The Genuine Opposition (GO) held its first political rally here on Saturday with only five senatorial bets attending.
Of the 12 candidates, only former Senators Loren Legarda, Dominique “Nikki” Coseteng, and John Osmena, Sonia Roco, and Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, son and namesake of incumbent Senator Aquilino Pimentel Jr. attended the rally to deliver their speeches.
GO's campaign managers -- San Juan Mayor Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito and former Senator Ernesto Maceda -- were also there to oversee the event.
Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, who joined Saturday morning's motorcade, did not show up.
And while the opposition claimed that the province was a stronghold, it was unable to fill the town plaza here.
GO coordinators estimated the crowd to be between 2,000 and 5,000.
Not even entertainers, including Alyssa Alano, Tiya Pusit, Inday Garutay, and Dinky Doo could help create a huge crowd.

Madugay bitaw unya makita nalang nato nga diha sa GO -Genuine opposition, duna diay nasagol nga dili genuine.
^^ I thought they're united? Or is it because they have changed their name to another one to which Erap has difficulty to remember? Or is that the reason why they decided to change it to another name, Genuine Opposition this time?
Not creating a huge crowd seemed to be contrary to the surveys that were earlier reported. Maybe because the people are seeing the true colors of the candidates.
abi nako ug DO ila group..Disunited Opposition![]()
Pila man diay canidate sa oposisyon karon? walay labot nang adopted kunuhay nila ha....
Defensor: Rivalries at local level could affect Team Unity victory
Senatorial candidate Michael Defensor admitted Wednesday that political rivalries among members of the administration coalition at the local level could affect Team Unity's chances of winning the senatorial race.
"Maybe in other places it will have an effect because instead [of helping] the administration's senatorial candidates, local leaders will be busy fighting fellow administration members," Defensor said when asked if the election rift between Lilia Pineda and Mark Lapid in Pampanga would affect Team Unity's campaign in the province.
Both Pineda and Lapid are known supporters of President Arroyo. They are both vying for the gubernatorial seat of Pampanga.
Defensor said even with the obvious rivalry between the two top supporters of the administration in Pampanga, he is confident that Team Unity would still prevail in the province.
"Kapampangans will always be supportive of the President and whatever rivalries in the local level will never affect their support [for] the President," he said.
Defensor said the arbitration committee formed by the administration coalition was tasked to fix similar problems in the local level.
The committee has representatives from major member parties of the administration coalition such as Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, Nationalist People's Coalition, Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (KAMPI) and the Lito Atienza-wing Liberal Party.
Defensor said Team Unity candidates are hopeful that the political rivalries of administration members in the local level would be solved by the arbitration committee soon.
In Pangasinan, Speaker Jose de Venecia could face fellow Lakas party member, Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim, who is widely supported in the province.
Lim had said that once he announces his candidacy for congressman, he could join the opposition. He said this was inevitable since de Venecia is a top member of Lakas.
Congressman Oyie Umali of Lakas and Vice-Governor Boyet Joson of KAMPI have also signified their intentions to run for governor of Nueva Ecija.
Arroyo’s rally fails to wow allies
By Jeanette P. Malinao
CEBU CITY -- The launching of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Team Unity senatorial slate at the New Cebu Coliseum Saturday was intended to be different from the usual campaign activity: no dance and song numbers, only the disclosure of candidates’ plans.
But the two-hour activity saw nothing beyond the loud beating of drums and campaign jingles, candidates making general statements for the country’s progress and President Arroyo raising the hands of the senatorial bets.
“There was no substance and content. It was more of rabble-rousing and mob rule. As a member of a party that’s probably going to have an alliance or arrangement with this ‘coliseum party,’ I don’t really feel proud,” Cebu Provincial Board Member Victor Maambong said in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu.
“We attained nothing except knowing kinsay gwapo ug gwapa (who looks good),” he added.
Maambong hopes Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña will lead Cebu to a “more substantive way” of presenting senatorial candidates, “not like this showbiz style.”
‘Hakot’
Garcia and Osmeña were not part of the organizers of the activity. They were there only as guests and as part of protocol when Arroyo visits Cebu.
Earlier, Garcia already announced that her One Cebu party will choose carefully in endorsing senatorial candidates.
Members of her party, however, attended. Aside from the mayors, vice mayors and councilors, also present were Reps. Simeon Kintanar, Red Durano, Eduardo Gullas, Nerissa Soon-Ruiz Antonio Cuenco and Raul del Mar. Representatives Antonio Yapha and Clavel Martinez were nowhere to be seen.
After a brief pause when asked what he thought of the activity, San Francisco Mayor Al Arquillano, who traveled all the way from Camotes island with his council for the event, replied: “Alimuot (It’s humid).”
Carcar Vice Mayor Roger Montesclaros said it was “well-attended.” He said it was good there were no hecklers and that the crowd was “appreciative” of the candidates’ presentation.
Maambong also said one cannot discount that it was a “hakot” crowd, noting signs of being organized like the T-shirts worn by those in the audience.
Some reporters also saw a woman bringing what appeared to be a list and distributing P500 bills to some people.
Concerns
Most of the 12 candidates’ speeches, including that of actor Cesar Montano, cited the need to protect children and ensure that they have a good future.
Aside from children, other general issues they cited were education, employment and poverty.
Senator Edgardo Angara mentioned expanding senior citizens’ discounts and Philhealth coverage, while Sultan Jamalul Kiram III spoke of the need to develop Mindanao for the country to grow.
Angara was also the only one to mention support for a raging local issue that is being made a requirement for them to be carried in sample ballots of Governor Garcia’s One Cebu party.
For senatorial candidates to get One Cebu’s endorsement, Garcia said they must sign a written commitment that they will oppose the bills to split Cebu into four provinces.
Vic Magsaysay and Chavit Singson, for their part, stressed the importance of strengthening local government units and decentralization.
“Taking care of the provinces will be my personal mission,” said Singson, who made it a point to recognize Tessie Oreta and Tito Sotto, who were in the opposition, in his speech.
