Filters vs Photoshop

Hi guys!

As an art student, I've had extensive experience sa Adobe Photoshop so touch ups, and photo edits are not new to me. What is new to me are the lens filters. I'm getting interested in them after I got my first CPL Filter (NISI Wideband Pro CPL). Other than it seems to change the colors from warm to cool, I have no idea what this does.

So is anyone out here willing to explain to me the various effects of the various lens filters?

Which lens filter is the best to use in order to create great images?

And is it worth spending money to buy lens filters or just leave everything to Photoshop?

Filters are often used in landscape and if you check the thread that Mike shared you will find that majority of the shots if not all are landscape photos. If you dig landscape, the basic filters to have would be cpl, solid and grad filters.

I would suggest to go for square filters for NDs plus it's holder to give you the flexibility to use the filters to which lenses you have. You just simply buy the adapter rings for your filter set if the thread sizes are different. Having filters can be expensive even if you go for the cheap ones this is because they stack up as you buy to address your need and the next thing you know, you have a collection of filters to which the cost is equivalent to a good lens or entry level dslr camera already.

Btw, you will also need a tripod and remote shutter release since filters causes one stop or higher in your exposure depending on what you use. Your cpl causes 2 stops hence would need a slower shutter speed to get the correct exposure and in lowlight condition such as sunrise or sunset shooting handheld can cause blurry or soft images.

ND filter (cuts light) <-- nindot ni pang shoot ug wide aperture and hayag ang light or mo increase sa imong exposure time
CPL (enhance colour and cuts reflection)
colour filters - sa film panahon kung color film mo color correct siya... for black and white mo effect siya sa contrast
infared... infrared2x
special effect filters... daghan ni ng klase2x pero i don't think naa pa kaayo ni sila ron..


each filter naai ila2x lain2x na use and if imo gamiton sakto mo produce siya ug nindot nga picture..

example (1)
high noon then nag shoot ka ug portrait in the middle of nowhere and gusto ka mag bokeh2x ug f/2.8 pero no matter gi unsa nimo pag lower sa ISO ug pag pas2x sa imong shutter mo taas gahapon imong aperture.. ND filter to the rescue.. butang ka then instantly mo drop siya ug 3 stops (ND8??) then you get your bokeh

example (2)
shoot ka ug river and gusto ka mag cotton2x effect, ma kuha ni nimo without fitlter before sunrise or after sunset, okay let's say wa ka naka mata ug sayo or naa ka lakaw later so mo shoot ka hayag kaayo which imo shutter is very taas... ND again to the rescue para ma darkend ang light then maka expose ka ug longer time para ma blur ang river mo agi making it the cotton2x effect...

okay nindot na tanan pero na samokan ka sah reflection sa river kay ma kit.an ka or just plain samokan lang and gusto ka mo enhance ug colour.. CPL to the rescue!

mahal ang filters ron.. pero sa tanan nga filters I think ang dili ma apas sa photoshop kay ang CPL (cutting reflection)... naa ra gud na nimo if imo nalng i.pp or dili.. IMO(in my opinion) i'd rather spend more time shooting than mag atubang sa computer cge ayo ug picture.. (tagam na ko ana.. hehehe.. )

Salamat sa mga inputs guys! Mi level up ako natun-an sa filters hehehe. Yeah, I guess this comes at another expense....pero interested na nuon ko sa ND8. I mean, I loooooove my 58mm CPL, and after all this, I think I'll get the ND8 52mm. Lisud au i-photoshop nang cottony effect sa tubig. I'll be going back to the City of Waterfalls, my hometown of Iligan soon so better to shoot the falls with a nice ND8....unless you guys have other suggestions?

BTW, parehas ra na B+W ug ND filters? O lahi na siya? Aha masnindut for water shots? Noob pa ayu ko. Dunay isa atong forum na posted ni boss michael nga nice daw ang B+W ND110. Confused ko....

*face palm* Okay, hahah I thought B+W meant na you can switch from colored to black and white using the filter. Would be nice para instantly play sa saturation w/o using photoshop. Thanks! Now I know what to save up for next
