update:

did a quick test auto wb vs. grey card vs. coffee filter

auto - a little off ang blue and daghan2x ug red but over all it's pretty good
grey card - a little off pud but comparing sa auto it's pretty much centered
coffee filter - lacks red and too much blue

tested this on mix lighting (ambient + tungsten) at ISO400, 1" and at f/8
    setup

    -----

If maka lugar ko I'd go and test katong cheap alternative na white balance cap and if okay siya will do another more controlled test..

    ----

did a second test under tungsten light ug fluorescent light

under tungsten light.. coffee filter and grey card performed quite well

under fluorescent light sadly the coffee filter came out a little blueish..

bro P-chan unsa imong test subject ani? ang living room? or white wall?

nag test ko gabii just after gyd ko ni post using a material like foam pad sa UV filter (timing nkoi extra) it works.
pero tan.aw pa nko iyang histogram karn using CS5. ako to gisunod ang link sa flickr nga imong gi post.
ang expodisc naa lng gyd cyay prisim mao mkakuha cyag more area than the DIY...

updated: took some test shots from foam-like material light source: Halogen bulb

foam-like material sa UV filter protection

    AWB: f/5.6, 1/3s, ISO 400 (hand held)

Custom White Balance: f/5.6, 1/3s, ISO 400 (hand held)

ang room mo show rah ug set up ako gi buhat..... ako siya gi compare mismo with the grey card(which I got from Photoshop for only P180) which we know na it's 18% grey (wai tint mo dominate)

second test was done sa CR with a tungsten nah light and the guest room nah fluorescent lights

btw I went to parkmall and na swertehan ko they have the cheap alternative sa expodisk.... the one na katong purag traslucent plastic and katong cap with a white sphere sa tunga... and here's my result... ang katong translucent plastic cap is the same rah gud with the coffee filter... bluish... the cap with the sphere sa tunga is a little redish... (for portraits maybe?) and also naka bantay ko sa katong cap with the sphere sa tunga dili siya maka hatag ug exposure unless imo i.spot meter ang imo cam.

    nice test bro...

since ni na revived ni nga topic bro P-Chan I'm contemplating on getting the Expodisc or just getting the X-Rite Color Checker Passport. kai karn lng ko nka reliazed nga importante kau ang color correction sa result sa image.
I've been practising my new found Expodisc alternative pero naa mga instances nga off ang iyang color. usahay mas mogawas nga maau pa mag AWB nlng rather than going through this Custom things.

usually magkabuang cya sa outdoor and when the light is so bright or padung somewhere between Golden Hour - OFF kau iyang color sa kanang foam-like material. but when it comes to using continues light like our ceiling lights almost similar gyd sa actual color nga akong makita. I did some test on Speedlights too maau pd cya gamiton provided single lighting imong gamiton but haven't tried using multiple light setup. sa Expodisc (wai problema as per review).

so I've been doing several searches about which is which - Expodisc or CCPP (color checker passport). I know if your into Post Processing most of the time mas convienient ang color checker since pwede nmn ka magpreset daan using LR or ACR.
while sa Expodisc actual shooting time gyd hasta kapila ka mag CWB evertime ka mag change of scene when outdoor.

I hope naay mka hatag ug input sa mga nkasuway using ani nga tools.

ang color checker passport mao2x ra siya sa grey card only more colorful... ang advantage ani is maka himo ka ug camera profile sa computer...

unsa nga alternative imu gi gamit? imo gi point at the light source ang alternative?

yes same procedure sa expodisc - kanang white material nga hapin sa akong UV filter naa sa picture sample test shots CWB. mao na akong gina gamit until mkakuha ko either expo or ccpp. right now i'm more inclined to ccpp bt i need to calibrate my monitor pa. kng di gani... I'll end up getting the expo instead.

    i can get expodisc 77mm - $86 or ccpp - $88 sa amazon
