Well, in the opening scenes of the The Fellowship of the Ring, the discovery of the ring by Bilbo was already shown, hence explained.

As to why it was made after the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, simple: the book trilogy is cleary more popular and superior to the The Hobbit. I honestly don't think we would appreciate the The Hobbit more if it had been made first. (I'm glad del Toro left, and Jackson came back to direct it.)

By the way, I'm quite surprised at the size difference between Thorin and the rest of the dwarves. I seem to recall the book describing him as larger than the rest, but he looks as big as Gandalf in the trailer. Your thoughts?

At first I didn't care about the casting for The Hobbit. And then I got into BBC's Sherlock. And now I care about the casting. A LOT.

Because Martin Freeman is playing Bilbo. And Benedict Cumberbatch is voicing Smaug. *_*

I remember reading the book back in 5th grade, before the LoTR movies came out, and before I saw the animated feature "The Hobbit"...I really couldn't picture out how Bilbo Baggins would look like.
