Because Philippines has a hard time developing the area maybe? Hence mining and producing it into usable resources? And they need China to pitch in and take a share? You need to really drill your own oil and export it all by yourself. Philippines has sold out their resources for way too long and it's a lazy habit with serious consequences.

^ I understand your sentiment against Chinese government but there's nothing unique about China in the way it's acting. This is how powerful nations have always acted towards smaller countries that's why there isn't a superpower that hasn't annexed territory it doesn't own at some point in its history. The only answer to this is regional cooperation between smaller countries because individually none of the countries that China has territorial disputes with can win a war against them. If you're in doubt, ask the Vietnamese how they lost an entire island to China. Defending our territory is noble, but without regional cooperation it's suicide. We need action from ASEAN now not the eerie silence we're getting from people who are our so-called allies. I'm really upset that ASEAN has been so quiet about this, what a bunch of spineless cowards they are more afraid of losing trading rights to China rather than making a stand to defend one of its founding members.

What China is doing is clearly an Act of indirect bullying of U.S. and its allies. Therefore, Scarborough Shoal is worth defending by peaceful means as what everybody wants.

You cannot allow China to just own anything that's within in their map. Because if you give way on the Scarborough shoal issue then you'll wake up soon with Chinese Tanks in your backyard, Chinese fighter Jets in the beautiful skies of Cebu, Chinese battle ships off the coast of Mactan and worst Chinese army ready to occupy all your properties then you'll end up working with them. Nobody, wants this to happen, you dont want to be in the scenario of EMPIRE of the Sun Movie (a Steven Spielberg Movie for those who havent seen it yet).. Well, this might sound so exaggerated but is very possible if we put our guards down!

China isn't imperialistic to be nation building or conquering. They're more interested in Taiwan. They just decided to flex a little and see if the Philippines would respond or back down. Apparently most are not having it what the Chinese want. They won't use military force and occupy the Philippines. They have no need.
