For basic disposable items, i suggest TCE. But if you really want your gear/equipment to last, no matter of the pricetag, i suggest get some other brands aside from what TCE has to offer. Not to be biased, but their equipment's CRAP. Not all, but most are...

That's one this i learned & experienced. And that i did the hard way. Ie; Having the monster fish of your dreams at the end of your line with their top shelf gears only to have the equipment obliterate in your hands while fighting the fish. And not to mention the equipment then i used was rated WAY ABOVE the weight class of the fish.

So i suggest you go look somewhere else, invest in something else. A gear that's of quality enough, that matches the price, and would surely last you more happy memorable experience. Other tackleshops options are: Hahns & Chris Sports, they have better quality fishing gear @ the price that's very competitive...

    Cheers!

Don't get me wrong sir. TCE products are fairly good, some above good. But why would you settle yourself with something good or fairly good, when you can always have or get something that's BETTER.

TCE has rods/reels which are less than 1k, no arguing there.

Questions are: Are they worth it? Would it last? Would it fulfill your purpose, make you smile or grumps you with dissapointment (when the right moment comes)? Would you settle for such, or would you rather shell out just a wee bit more and get the extra peace of mind, that the stuff you just bought will live up to your expectations & probably even more?

In short... Not everything that's cheap comes with quality, neither does everything that's pricey fancy too.
But most of the time, "You always get what you paid for".

    Here's something to think about...

You have 1.5k or 2k or even 3k. And you want to get yourself a basic starter package rod & reel that's of good quality, and would give you peace of mind by surviving almost anything you can get it into. Think of impromptu fishy outings with the family (payponds, backyard ponds, streams & billabongs), to weekend trips with your mates (pier, wharf, jetty fishing, inshore & beach casting, probably even a boatie trip). From the most miniscule, irrelevantly weak Tilapia; to the fiesty Mangos & Pargos; the runners & shakers Snakeheads & Barracudas; to the brutes Ladyfish & Oxeyes; and the arm-breaking Milkies?

Now, would you go for a brand that's in the market for just a few years, with little to none existing product R&D and quality control BUT with a slightly cheaper price-tag? Or would you rather go for something that's in the market for decades, long enough to be a benchmark or be a gold-standard, with years of extensive product R&D, testings & innovation; as well a quality guarantee; but just a few digits higher up the price?

Quantity or Quality? China or Japan?

    Hehehe...

.....in fairness to TCE Tackle Shop...
....for poor beginners who doesn't have all the money and fortune to afford the good quality fishing gears..... TCE tackle shop has all the choices depending on how much you wanna spend.... TCE tackle shop has everything from the cheap one's, middle grade and the expensive one's too !....if herp-doctor was dissapointed of what he got from TCE... then, it was his choice.....
for beginners like me don't have to dig deep into my pocket...and if some some reason I will get addicted into fishing ?...then maybe if funds and resources will allow.... I can always upgrade my gears..... thats my 2 cents....
