as long as its the same hardware, i think you can reinstall it again and again. i have winxp home on an hp pavillion 750, formatted it atleast 7-9 times already, no problems with the windows installation activation and updates. should your machine hardware change(significant), you might need to call microsoft for another reactivation key(at their discretion) or you may have to buy another win license.

and you cant install OEM software to another machine, its piracy, for Full Packaged Product windows(the box type) they have slightly different EULA where u can install the product on 1 desktop pc and optionally on 1 portable pc(laptop) provided that the user of the machine is just a single entity. i dunno if the EULA has changed though, but last time i checked this was it(and i think its similar to win2k pro license arrangements)

What version of Windows do you think is pre-installed on HPs and Compaqs? They are OEMs. You can only install it on the original hardware the software came with ... meaning you cannot install it on both the desktop and laptop that the original poster asked.

Are you sure about that? What if I installed it on a virtual machine (like VMWare) on the same machine that I installed the Windows XP.

    Here's my scenario :

Right now I'm using Linux as my primary O.S. I would like to install/buy Windows XP Home Edition on an another Hard Disk. I will also install XP (same machine) on my VMServer which it is running on a Linux OS. I would like to install on a VMWare because maybe I would like to run some windows applications on the Linux OS. Though running a windows XP inside Linux OS is a last resort if wine http://www.winehq.org/ cannot run it.

Does it already violated the EULA?

what do you mean "are you sure about that?

what part of my statement man imo gi ask?

    reformatting my system many times?

installing on another pc is piracy?

bro, different EULAs for different versions of windows, sometimes even different releases of the same version, try to read lang the EULA of the OS you will be purchasing para you wont be mistaken and you get protected.

and yes, there are EULAs (i think my win2k pro and some Win98 say these, pre second ed)that say you can install it on one desktop machine and on a portable machine provided that it is owned/operated by the same user(or something to that sort, gotta read my EULA again)

IF you read the EULA on VMwares software(i had vmware back in 2003), they state that every virtual machine is considered a logical separate machine and that you must have corresponding licenses for every Operating system you install even when using a virtual machine in vmware. but, if it says you can install your os on 1 machine, (which is technically true, kay VMware rman ka) you can argue that you can install multiple copies of the OS on the machine, well i dunno how to interpret that. its the discretion of microsoft or vmware,
