by this logic there would only about 20 countries instead of the 196 countries we have today. Every map has to be redrawn. If we based Chinese claims dating back to 2 BCE (Han) China would only be a fraction of what it is today. Mongolia would own a lot of China's territory. It's totally anachronistic, and it's absurd to make claims based on "historical" documentary.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on Thursday that Japan has decided to provide the Philippines with patrol ships, to support the island country in its territorial dispute against China.

The newspaper said that Japan has decided to provide vessels, including one-thousand ton patrol ships, to the Philippines by the end of the year. The move comes after the Japanese government eased last year the Three Principles of Arms Export, which bans Japan from exporting its arms.

The newspaper explained that this is a move to raise the Philippines’ maritime safety capabilities in the South China Sea, where it is clashing with China over sovereignty rights.

The United States and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are said to be keeping China in check as part of their efforts to maintain maritime security, which Japan also supports

Historical claims are BS because under the same logic, there's no reason why China can't lay claim to all of Palawan, seeing as how the Chinese have settled in some parts of the island in the pre-Spanish era. I normally don't subscribe to the 'slippery slope' school of thought, but if you give a sizable portion of your territory to a force seeking expansion, you might as well be ready to give more.
