Soil is a temporary geologic configuration. Soil is basically the product of detritus of once-living matter, mixed with the debris coming from the natural diastrophistic processes (i.e. erosing, uplifting, etc.)that the surrounding land undergoes--what you need to measure when dealing with vast sections of time is the bedrock.
