I cannot figure out why anyone can be so pessimistic about these types of development. @High_heels: If you can read the main article. " The assistant secretary at the Department of Agriculture (DA) and coordinator of the National Rice Program (NRP), has already endorsed to Agriculture Secretary a proposal to create a technical working group (TWG) to study the matter. "

If you can read it again, TECHNICAL GROUP that will "STUDY" the whole matter. Why are you "self-concluding" about the leasing problems? I do not work with the DA's, and so do you. So why don't we let them give this a test? If it fails, then the agreement will be cancelled. Remember, this is our platform, we own the stage, if RP decides to stop the lease, we still can. And for the record, I do respect your opinion, and please respect the opinion of other istoryans- and even farmers.

Would you rather let a thousands/ millions of hectares of agricultural land remain undeveloped due to lack of capital or lease them to a foreign company, who at the same time is willing to fund a propagation project for other rice varieties.

@High_heels: THese statments made by sectors " who has the same thoughts as you" are baseless allegations, unproven facts and xenophobia. This same project stresses that the produce from the investment projects are “not exclusively for exports" ( meaning, according to several DAR and DA statistics, which will be 60% exports and 40% internal consumption) and that there is “no minimum volume required for produce exports" in any of the contracts. Remember, this is addition to what we have as of now, so why lack food if it is ACTUALLY ADDING UP to our current levels?
So people, speak up, why can't we give this a try, while we get a bucket of popcorn and watch how this grows. If it fails, no bother, it's not our money spent, we can disapprove the deal. If it works, then we see the Philippines feeding itself, and being one of the biggest rice exporter in Asia.

Right bro. Daghan man gud tao dri sa forums na jumping conclusions dayun, Wlay optimism, wlay backbone nga i-try unsay dapat i-try, wlay determination, puro negative. Worst case scenario ang pirmi i project nila :

    "mutaas ang presyo sa bugas"
" makulangan daw ta ug supply"
"Gamiton lang sa lain nasud ato yuta"
    "Luoy ang mga farmers"
    etc...

Note: These departments are paid and have existed to assess the pros and cons on these matters. So let them have it, likewise, if PNoy promised a resolution that RP will be exporting rice by 2014, so why dont' we try giving them a chance and see?

Let's just see how this go, if they push this through and the prices go on the roof and you'll hear people around you whinging and ranting with the rice prices then sure you can keep being optimistic. Do you have any clue how much a kilo of basmati rice? And if this works, farmers will make a good dough out of this agreement don't you think other farmers from other states wouldn't want to do the same? Everyone will be after of the profit and they will not think of what's going to happen with the others if all they care about is profit. How much is a kilo of rice now? Id really bet you can expect dollar prices once this agreement goes through and when that happens, there will be no turning back for a long time and were talking about 220k hectares of land, think of the populAtion of the rice eaters in Phil and then do the math.
