What's layer mask?

Try these instead:
1. Open File
2. Duplicate Layer (Ctrl+J)
3. Convert the Duplicate Layer to B&W by Channel Mixer
4. Use Eraser tool to erase the part that you don't want to be B&W
5. Flatten Image and basically you're done.
I use Layer Mask, because with that I can have more control and also, I can just easily redo everything if I want to mask/unmask or vice versa.
