Sit ups aren't as effective in getting rid of the belly kay your belly is made up of fats and fats is stored energy. No matter how many sit-ups you do, you can never change adipose tissue(belly) to muscle(abs). Take note that your abs is a large erect muscle located UNDER your belly so you need to burn all that fat to expose your muscles. So the best way to get rid of fats or stored energy is to exercise. When you do sit-ups, you only develop your abs but they are still covered by your fats. I read an article a few months back that if you focus on the leg muscle groups when exercising, it is far more effective in getting rid of the infamous belly. This is because when you use your legs more, the more energy you burn due to the fact that there are far more muscles in your legs compared to any other part of your body and your leg muscles are also very large and extensive to support your own body weight. e.g. anti-gravity muscles
Hope this helps
