"Philippines to acquire 2nd US warship soon
    (philstar.com) Updated April 17, 2012 12:01 PM

MANILA, Philippines - The second United States warship to be acquired by the Philippines will arrive in the second quarter, the Department of National Defense (DND) said Tuesday.

“Within the year, we will acquire that. The US government said we will be able to get it. Maybe in the second quarter, we will acquire it,” DND Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said in a press briefing today.

Gazmin made the statement amid the ongoing standoff in the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal which began last week when Philippine Navy troops boarded and inspeated eight Chinese private fishing vessels and found illegally-collected giant clams, live sharks and corals among the fishermen's catch.

Gazmin, however, said the military’s modernization efforts have nothing to do with the Philippines’ territorial row with China.

“The (capability upgrade) program is not directed towards China. We are doing this to improve our capability and to do our responsibilities and duties in protecting territorial areas both land and sea,” Gazmin said.

Panatag Shoal is 124 nautical miles from the nearest base point in Zambales. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Panatag Shoal falls within the Philippines’ 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone.

The Philippines has protested the action of China, which responded by claiming that the area falls within its territory. The failure to apprehend the Chinese fishermen has been blamed on the Philippines’ lack of naval capabilities.

Washington has earlier promised that it would help improve Manila’s capability in securing Philippine maritime borders. The BRP del Pilar is the first warship provided by the United States to the Philippine Navy. It arrived in the country’s territory last year.

The second warship, the 45-year old USS Dallas, was commissioned by the US Coast Guard in 1967.

The transfer cost for the USS Dallas is expected to be close to the P450 million spent for the acquisition of BRP del Pilar. Alexis Romero and J. Marce" - Philippine Star

Kung dako jud kaayo ma improve tungod sa AFP modernization program within years, kaya man nato. Dili man pod basta2 ang training, samot na sa PMA kay heavily based rapod na siya sa West Point sa US ang kulang lang jud nato is the advanced technologies.

These old 378 cutters (Hamilton Class) may not be brand new or modern, but they are the best ships we could acquire to patrol WPS, most frigates have 9,000 NM endurance these cutters have 14,000 NM endurance...

Any single Chinese submarine could destroy our Navy ship.
