i actually had this issues raised... i don't understand why everything here is just way too costly... not only gadgets... it also includes clothing and even jewelry at that matter. For the past two years, all my purchases have been via the net despite the 3 week waiting period this is because of how cheap things are abroad... if china materials are cheap here, check out some chinese sites all over the net, they're almost giving their items away... anyway i saw this thread on yahoo answers... and it speaks of what i have in mind...
i do understand we do require imports to have taxes... and so as other countries with their imports... still WHY are things abroad still reasonably priced compared locally?
1. Is our local taxes high enough for most things to be sold double the price from abroad... I'm pretty sure those being sold abroad were also imported FROM somewhere in the four corners of the earth...
2. Are businessmen taking advantage of the fact that not everyone can afford to purchase online?
3. What are the basis of these price range?
If we'd use gadgets as an example, Apple sells their iPad for only about $499 straight from their factory with FREE shipping, but locally, it's selling in a whooping Php48,000 or about US$1066 with the same version. An iPhone is just about US$149 up to $200 as well in the states and you can even apply for a verizon line for zero fees while that sells locally for about Php 40,000 or about US$888. And this applies to the rest of the gadgets there is ranging from your basic phone to a laptop, from Blackberry, Sony Ericsson etc.
Another example I have is when purchasing for a certain clothing line to which at that time, the mall was screaming "sale". I noticed that local brands cost almost the same as imported brand items for basic tees and to disbelief, an imported brand was selling their off-the-rack sale items far more cheaper than the local brands. Shouldn't local brands be more reasonably priced (though i know some prime local brands have their items done in China nowadays)? And even signature items that cost way too high here and are far cheaper abroad. I can get a Philip Stein at $300 abroad (which is still costly)compared here that sells at a whooping Php25K and up to even their entry level line Fruitz at $99 which is around Php4000+... an entry level Technomarine Cruise for $175 plus FREE SHIPPING.
Even hotels are more costly. I noticed this when i used to work as an assistant to a foreign businessman when scheduling his trips and booking his travels. I found out that he can have a room that's convenient enough for a night for just $30 and that comes with several amenities such as the pool, two bedrooms, twin size beds etc. that are very well kept. Well, of course there are much costly ones for the high end hotels, but i'm talking about practicality here. From there, I also noticed even our local trips are far more costly compared to having a vacation to HongKong or Vietnam with all those promo trips available for only $250-$350 all-in packages while going to a local destination would cost you the same.
A few people mentioned that since we're an archipelago, coming from point A and getting to point B are a few of the toll costs that's causing these prices to increase. However, we're paying in pesos so even at that point, they shouldn't get anywhere higher to twice its cost specially with items coming from abroad that's directly shipped by manufacturers to our local distributors. Should that mean that items coming from New Jersey change as soon as they get to New York which is a separate island? An Ipad for example will still cost the same in 48 states after being shipped from China.
So, what are your possible thoughts about this?
@TS - hayy coz of tax... and tax... thats why daghan smuggled hehehe... compare nimo online sa mga US online stores or Singapore... mahal gyud kaayo pag abot dri sa pinas...
