The group is known to have defended Ugandan troops, who are as guilty as Kony of the same crimes. They are trivializing the conflict there, making it a black and white issue, when it isn't.

Second, treating their problems as one-dimensional issues that can be solved by a handful of plucky college students armed only with the strength of their convictions and a video camera doesn’t help anyone. These gets back to something very simple and very smart that Alanna Shaikh wrote a few months ago:

“Bad development work is based on the idea that poor people have nothing. Something is better than nothing, right? So anything you give these poor people will be better than what they had before.”

By the same token, any old awareness advocacy you dream up doesn’t necessarily constitute “helping.” And while we’re on the subject of what does and doesn’t help, maybe don’t get photographed fondling big (former) rebel guns. Just saying.

with that regard, donating money and still believing in these peoples' words is still a person's prerogative. we do not have any right to hinder them from doing charity work. and at the same time, we are entitled to our own opinion. so, in one word or another, the decision still lies to the person.

in other words, hindi naman natin matatawag yan na donasyon kung bukal sa kalooban natin dba.

The main concern I have is what if donations, even partial, may end up with benefiting the Ugandan government (IC is known for defending the position of Ugandan troops, even though it is widely known that they rape, pillage and use child soldiers). In a bid to eradicate the LRA, they are helping the cause of Uganda's military which is ironically guilty of the same crimes Kony and his men are guilty of. Understand that there are plenty of villains in Africa, many of equal station to Kony and the LRA--and they are not all on the same side of the fence.

The fact is, it works.... the views and buzz prove it. I Wonder how many people have actually read Chris Blattmen's blog? (You should by the way it's good). Film makers, writers, commentators in the charity sector are in the business of generating hype and this is what this does, and if they manage to find him and arrest him and this campaign has helped bring the cunt to justice then they can be as smug and indie as they bloody well like. Donating an insignificant amount of your own money is never a bad idea, being a self-loathing smug twat is.

Here's in response to the picture of the three men holding the guns, quoted by the organization:

^ There ya go. Come on, people. They hadn't even come up with the organization at that point...

I don't disagree with the people questioning the organization, because any smart person would do that. I do, however, disagree with those people making others feel bad for wanting to post and talk about this. With knowledge comes power, and with power comes change. Nobody says you have to donate to Invisible Children. Nobody says you have to spread the word. It's everyone's choice to make for themselves. I don't see how talking about an issue that hasn't really been talked about is such a bad thing. It can't do any harm, right? The more people know, the more they can do something about it. And what is Facebook for, if not to spread the word on a real atrocity going on in the world? I don't know about you all, but I find this a much better use of Facebook than the normal "OMG, I BROKE UP WITH MY BOYFRIEND FOR THE THOUSANDTH TIME!" posts.

It is very sad, and arguably indicative of our generation, that when a person puts themselves in the public eye trying to achieve something exceptionally worthwhile people instantly look for the dirt beneath the surface.

Don't get me wrong, people like Bono and Chris Martin who walk about looking smug and attempting to change global politics by giving their children silly names deserve our contempt.

However, I am yet to read one valid criticism of KONY. Yes they get paid a fair amount, but it's nothing compared to the earning of CEOs from charities such as Oxfam. Moreover, how much time and effort did they put in for free in the getting the charity started?

I also think it is a bit rich of VICE magazine, the magazine that popularized frame-less glasses and ironic haircuts, to talk about Invisible Children being staffed by 'Douchebags'. Pot-Kettle?

The only thing that matters is that people don't confuse affirmative action with clicking a 'like' button. If people don't build on the hype, and give it meaning, it will fade as quickly as it arose.

If you don't believe Invisible Children is the best way to combat Kony or that it isn't an issue which needs addressing, then use your efforts trying to think of a better solution or hunting for a cause that is worthwhile, not chastising those who are already trying.
