My bad ... I was thinking of CARAT EXCERCISES ( Which is the real joint military excercise , I was with Operation Cobra Gold in 98 or 00 ) which involves the Naval forces in the Philippines Sea , China Sea , and all the maritime areas of the Southeast Asian nations to include the Pacific Rim .

Anyhoo ... still , it wont really shock PRC since wether its BALIKATAN or CARAT , it has a common denominator , the presence of Uncle Sam in foreign and territorial waters . What would be shocking if naay BALIKATAN between US , NORTH VIETNAM and KOREA hehehehe . Kana diha ma shock ang PRC .

Mind you guys .... naay US MILITARY BASES and DETACHMENTS sa PUSAN , SOUTH KOREA and numerous in JAPAN like SASEBO , OKINAWA , YOKOSUKA , MISAWA etc .

The main purpose of a military joint excercise is to strenghten and establish readiness of the armed forces not only in war times but of peace times also .

If in worst case scenario na maka ingon ta na threatened gyud ang PRC , I'd be damned if naay gyera gyud but I doubt it . 2 very powerful nations will clash and you will know whats next . Its a domino effect an a bigger nation would be involved , UNITED NATIONS . Not in this lifetime otherwise hagbay ra unta nahitabo .

it won't provoke anything but paranoia in Beijing. I know the Chinese warhawks there will try to make something out of this, but Beijing won't probably act for this. If it was a military exercise between Taiwan, Vietnam, S. Korea, Japan and the Philippines then they might have cause for concern. As for the U.S. and China, I think they'd rather use their proxies to do their fighting if it were to come to that.

I am having this fear that we are about to meet World War 3 in this case when all the diplomatic pillars are down if ever China gets provoked or what have you.

its another way to intimidate china...but i dont think china would try to buy this kind of propaganda, he already has its own sources to go to. its all about playing the game and the philippines wants to join too.

this would most definitely not spark a war; it takes something worse than this to do so. what is worrisome however is the context on which these exercises are being done, which is of course, as a response to the aggressive posturing of China in the region.

the good spin is that the Japanese participation can be seen as a support for the Philippine position of sovereignty in the region. the bad side is that the US, together with an ally in the Pacific Rim, is reinforcing the Philippine position using it as a stronger pawn to get more concessions against China in its ongoing struggle for global supremacy.

this is the US flexing its influence muscles in a dispute that they supposedly have no role in, other than their conflict of interests with China. saying that, this dispute is another "bargaining chip" that they can use in China's face, making their position dependent on other issues within the US-China conflict.

relying on US intervention, what happens when China puts up an irresistible trade concession in exchange for the US and its allies turning a diplomatic (and military) blind eye when it becomes even more aggressive in this parts?
