Under the El Nino Sun
Dolphin Watching, White Sandbar, Bird Sanctuary and Mangrove Forest

Summer is the perfect time to plunge unto the cool waters, frolic at the beach, gaze at the clear blue sky, and just have a good time, relax, and have some fun. Especially with the intense heat generated by the El Nino, there would be no better place to fizzle out the blistering heat wave than to be close to nature and appreciate God's given wonders.

One such nature escapade would be the Bais Dolphin and Whale Watching. Aside from watching these playful cetaceans, the tour package also include beachcombing at the Manjuyod White Sandbar and a tour at the Talabong Bird Sanctuary and Mangrove Forest.




Other than the Bais City Tourism, there are private boats that offer dolphin watching. For Bais City Tourism, the boat costs us P4,000 which is good for 20 persons and the ride would start from 7:00 am till 3:00 pm. The dolphins are present all year long although the whales would only appear sporadically and you would be lucky enough if you can glimpse one on your trip.

Two weeks ago, we were able to take such escapade. Here are some snapshots and synopsis.



We left Bais Bay a few minutes past 7 am and there were some private yachts docking nearby.

Dolphin Watching

It took us 30 minutes to an hour of boat ride to search for the dolphins.



Suddenly, there were fins that sprang in and out of the water. First, you can only catch on just a few of them and then they come in numbers.



The feeling is ecstatic once you are near to these frolicking cetaceans as they swam along side the boat. To think how close you are from these mammals that just few more feet from your hands and you can now almost touch them.

Flipper the Dolphin and Willy the Killerwhale are amazing to watch when they perform circus tricks but just like humans they also long for freedom. It was not long ago when a killerwhale in Seaworld killed its trainer as it was already stressed out. Its good to know that these creatures are free to roam in their natural habitat and yet unknowingly at the same time they are helping humans earn through eco-tourism.



After getting a hang in watching those dolphins, our next stop would be the Manjuyod White Sandbar. It is about 20 to 30 minutes ride from where we at.

The sandbar is like a mirage in the sea where it would appear only in lowtide and disappear during hightide. By the time we arrived, it was almost high tide so there were only few patches of white sand left but still good enough for us. The sea is so clear and clean.

There are four cottages on stilts where one can stay even overnight. The solar panels provided electricity on these cottages.

The colors delineate the shallow white sand from the deep blue sea.


It is so clear that you can view the bottom. Schools of fish swam beside the boat.

The final stop would be the Talabong Bird Sanctuary and Mangrove Forest.

This mangrove forest is actually located on an island with a white sand beach. The forest covers wide area as it is 6400 hectares while the island itself is only 209 hectares.

It was such a fun and enjoyable experience. It would make you appreciate and encourage more on protecting and conserving the environment. The local governments of Bais and Manjuyod have done an awesome job in protecting Mother Nature and other God's creations.


"Talabong" is actually a vernacular for white herons and this bird bade us adieu.
