lain lain gyud na perspectives, if ang Spanish ang morelay sa Battle of Mactan di ba gi exaggerate ang number of warriors ni Lapulapu..How history is written depends on the perspective of the one writing it. Much of our history kay influenced by the Western perspective.

Patrocinio De Maria Church/ Rectory/ Belfry

Built in 1783, but during Fr. Julian Bermejo's tenure, the church complex underwent expansion of 1808. Work on the church, rectory and belfry took many years to become one complex.

Arch. Melva Java, in her article publish in Cebu Daily News, described the church complex as among the few maintained its square plan. "The look and layout has remained consistent with the 18th century plan as no new or additional structures that would obstruct or destroy alignments of buildings has been built by the succeding generations," she said.

The church is made of coral stones and hard wood. The roof is made of clay tiles. Twenty-six pilasters support the walls. The walls are as thick as the pilasters. In terms of oranmentation, the facade contains relief and carving depicting various biblical and church characters, such as the biblical snake and Ybix bird, etc. The retablos are gilded with gold dust. The choir loft sports intricate and fine tracery railings. The ceiling paintings are said to be 80 years old painted by Miguel Villareal, a native of Boljoon.

The parish was under the Spanish Friars up until 1948. The church structure is now Boljoon's landmark.

    Church Plaza

The church plaza is site of many religious festivities and activities through centuries of active chruch life. Until today, it serves as focal point of may religious and social festivities initiated by the Parish of the local government.

The plaza provides a perfect vantage point for the church edifice, the Ili rock formation on the north and the expanse of the cove, commanding the most unique and distinguishing vistas in the whole of Cebu.

It is also believed that the Plaza was a historic burial ground.

    Church Gates and Walls

Built between 1802 and 1808, the walls are attributed to Fray Julian Bermejo as part of his massive fortification of the church complex. There are three church gates, one in front and two on each side of the back fortification. At the corners of the back walls are bulwarks, which served as lookout. The gates and church walls are made of coral stoned and rubble.

    Escuela Catolica

Built in 1940, the structure has a rectangular plan with a formal symmetrical façade. The double grand staircase anchors its overall presence, with concrete balustrade terminating towards the veranda the ornate callado design. Wood relief ornamentation accentuates the base of the roof pediment. The building provides the only American era characteristic to a very strong Spanish colonial era church complex setting.

It is used to be a dormitory for children taking their first communion who were required to stay at the Escuela the night before taking the Holy Communion. It was used as a school for religious teachings and for a time was a primary school. It is now serves as meeting place for the Parish's various religious groups.

    Blockhouse – Fortress

The blockhouse is believed to have been built by Fray Julian Bermejo on 1808 and is the main fortress on the church complex's fortification. This stone structure is a large quadrangular house made of coral stonewalls and tile roofs. In some report, the wall is at least 1 meter thick. Its four corners were reinforced with loopholes. It was described by townspeople in earlier times as “dakong balay”. Today the blockhouse serves as the bell tower. It rises high over the Rizal Park and Municipal hall.

    Boljoon Municipal Hall

It was the site of the town hall built on 1913. It was demolished and replaced by the existing Post-independence Era structure, which stands as the present day municipal hall

From the accounts of Adolfo Estella, in the Second World War, o the site of the present municipal hall was where the Guerilla forces murdered Clito and Pantaleona Romero in the eve of liberation. It is also said that their dead bodies where buried on the same site.

Do you guys know why is it called "Mandaue" in Mandaue City, Cebu?

To those who doesn’t know about Mandaue City, let me tell you more about this place…

A thick vine called Mantawi was said to be where Mandaue got its name. Long before those Spanish conquistadores arrived in this part of the country, those vines grew abundantly and after a couple of “name mutations”, Mantawi got to be known now as Mandaue.

Mandaue City is one of the highly urbanized cities in the Visayas Region. It is dubbed as the industrial zone of the province of Cebu since a lot of manufacturing firms are located here. During the Spanish era, records show that Mandaue City is one giant hub for trading too. During these times, the city, with its eastern and southern boundaries facing the Mactan Strait, was already referred to as the “merchants’ paradise.”

The City of Mandaue was founded in April 7, 1521, when a “Cove of Cebu”, called Mandawe, was sighted by a Spanish expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan. The “Cove of Cebu”, which is located in the present Barangay Tipolo, became the host to the first facility in the country. Its establishment marked the origins of the industrialization of the country as it helped in the promotion and sustainability of the Acapulco Trade which took place at that time.

In 1571, Legaspi established the country’s first drydock complex on the shoreline of Tipolo, Mandaue, in order to hasten the colonization of the area. The drydock facilities, which were a few meters away from the existing location of the San Miguel Brewery Complex, reportedly serviced the Galleons of Legaspi.

    Famous Landmarks in Mandaue City

The city of Mandaue is actually huge. Most of what you’ll find here are both manufacturing firms and residential houses. The visible landmarks that represent Mandaue are found in the town proper.

A couple of kilometers away and under the Mandaue-Mactan bridge, you will find the Bantayan sa Hari (Moro watch-tower).

    Bantayan sa Hari, 1936

    Bantayan sa Hari, 1912

    Present

They say that the Bantayan sa Hari was built to protect the locals from the sea pirates.

A community was established in Mandaue by a flourishing group of Indonesian, Malayan and Chinese merchants in what was called the barangay. The Venetian chronicler Antonio Pigafetta wrote a settlement called Mandani existed in the area with a chieftain who was named Apo Noan then a few decades later another ruler named Lam Busan, probably Lakan Busan. Mandaue natives were forced into a town as decreed by the Spanish authorities. This may have started off as a mission village (which included present day Consolacion, Liloan and Poro) serving as a bulwark for the church in the northern Cebu and was managed by the Jesuit in 1638 then a century later by the Recollects. The Philippine revolution in 1898 gave the town a new form of administration in accordance with the organic decree of the Central Revolutionary Government. The short lived revolution was overthrown by the American Troops and a battle nearly destroys the town on 1901 and killing Presidente Benito Ceniza. Mandaue was Independent from being an American Commonwealth and a Japanese Garrison on July 4, 1946 along with the entire nation. Mandaue became a chartered city on June 21, 1969 by Mayor Demetrio Cortes Sr. The city was recognized as a Highly Urban City on 1991.

The wealth of Don Gil Garcia and his heirs come from the Escanos of Malitbog, where Don Mamerto's parents began their awesome wealth. Don Gil merely married a daughter of Don Fernando and Dona Agustina Escano. But Don Gil is also credited with increasing the Escano wealth a million times over, especially through VECO.

The Gazini Plaza is exactly where the house of Don Mamerto was once located. Can you still remember asa nah ang Gazini plaza? hehe
Gazini Plaza mao ni kanang atbang sa 138 mall or kanang collonade.. kanang kaay bakante nga lugar nga parkinganan nya naay namaligya og pirated cds. and tapad ani kanang cosmopolitan.

Rajah or Raja in sanskrit are based from an indian term Monarch, normally it means ruler of small kingdom or city state, the term existed even before the establishment of Islam, so its not entirely related to islam

and also, arabs may have established trade before the spanish came, not all Malay settlers are muslim

majority of islamic kingdom are based in mindanao (the sultanate of sulu which until now exists and continue to recieve payment from malaysia for the rent of Sabah [1]), while luzon is under the Kingdom of Tondo or Kingdom of Tundun which existed before the spaniards came, i think it was during 900 A.D.

Lapulapu is not even a filipino but a malay because there was no established official country at that time, magellan just claimed it for spain.
