Sinulog. Tradition or competition?

I think the big question here is..... does it really matter? people have their own different reasons that's why they're called individuals.

calling them greedy doesn't make you a saint nor calling them saints won't make you look greedy.

Because by the end of the day, what's important is how enjoyed your sinulog.

Well, for me personally, it does. If people are only joining the said event for the sake of money then they are not celebrating and honoring the blessed Santo Niño. Wala nila gi halad ilang sayaw ngadto sa Santo Niño kung dili ngadto sa mga hurado.

(bro gamay ra ang nangapil coz crisis to ug dili nimo mapugos ang usa ka community mag raise funds
kung naglisud jud! )


let me explain it this way...

It started as tradition and was promoted as competition..
not for money of some but for the benifit of Cebu City, The Church..
the culture and of course livelihood and most especially hope!

Wala ko nakita na dautan kung mag contest man..kung mag pa bida man mga politico
basta importante on top of it all...naa ang devotions!
kay it brings fun and happiness..for participants and spectators!

When everybody's happy then its GOOD!

even our Muslim brothers are happy..and welcome! so join the fun!

The religious event is done on church and procession!

So its very ok even mag contest pa mo during mardi gras!

Since 1521, devotion to the Santo Niño has grown and has taken root in Philippine popular piety, particularly in the Visayas; pilgrims from different parts of Cebu and the rest of the Philippines make their yearly journey to the church to take part in the procession and festival. Starting in 1980, the Cebu City government organized the Sinulog Festival and eventually gave incentives to tribal dance groups. The first Sinulog parade was held in 1980, organized by Dávid Odilao, then Regional Director of the Ministry of Sports, and Youth Development. The parade was composed of students dressed in Moro costumes, dancing the Sinulog to the beating of drums.

The idea caught and thus, under the direction of the Cebu City Mayor Florentino Solon with the help of several influential Cebuanos, Odilao turned over the Sinulog project to the Cebu City Historical Committee under Kagawad Jesus Garcia. It was the task of the Committee to conceptualize the Sinulog festival and make it into a yearly event from then on.

In 1981 the following year, the concept of the Sinulog Parade was actualized, involving practically every sector in the Cebuano community. Marking its difference from another popular festival, the Ati-Atihan in Aklan, the Sinulog focuses not on the ritual itself but on the historical aspects of the dance, which, as it has been said, represents the link the country's embrace of Christian faith.

With the other natives following her example, this moment was regarded as the first Sinulog.

re-enactment or symbolism is not religious tradition..
mardi gras is copied sa brazil...
our sinulog is the local version..
kung nag dance man sa mardi gras using the "image" of sto. nino.. it does not mean praising..but story telling!

nag doubt lng ko nimo na dili ka catholic!

simple ra bai.. ang sinulog festival is both pagan and religious event..
so it does not matter if ang parade dili holy! we all know that!

pero bottomline everybody celebrates!then its all good!

Di ko katoliko ha. pero i think ang essense sa inyung Sinulog is ang Misa sa Santo ninyo man cguro. kana inyung procession ig sabado, kana inyung fluvial parade - mao nay Sinulog ninyu guro. Now, kanang parada ug contest murag nahulog nga ang kalingawan nga part nah na. So if naay maka ingun ngari nga nigamay kada tuig ang niapil sa Procession or niapil sa Fluvial or nigamay ang tawo sa sto ninyo church ig misa, then anha pa mu maka ingun nga wa nay meaning inyung Fiesta. and besides, personal man sad ang kasaulugan ana, so di mu maka sulti nga wa nay bili.

for the prize money?? i dont think so.. naa mga lagyo kaau na contingent mo gasto minilyon para mka apil. and i think the grand prize is just 2million last year.. you do the math..

for me, the tradition goes along with the comnpetion for the best sinulog dance.. consolation nlng nah ang money maski gansi ghapon sila
