I use Advanced System Care for all around cleaning and boosting needs. Naa pud silay daghan useful tools like registry and disk defragment.
In addition to TS' post, I will also share my years of knowledge in configuring pc systems to maximize its performance... hope it helps... to refresh those who already knew and added info for the new PC builders...
1. DO NOT partition your HDD - Get a lower capacity HDD for your OS like 320gb and a separate 1TB HDD for your storage... The next partition is theoretically 10% slower than the previous... e.g. drive C: is running at 100% optimum speed while drive D: is at 90% and E: is at 80% and so on.. this is because C: is located at the outer layer of the disk which spins faster and the later partitions will be placed on the slower inner layer... Imagine a WHEEL... the outer rubber may have a wider area to cover when rotating than the center axle of the wheel BUT they surely have the same time of completing a rotation.. this means data spins faster on the outer disk than the inner... or better yet, if you only have 1 HDD... install ULTIMATE DEFRAG on your pc... its a defragger that separates active system files from the dormant, speed dragging, archive files (like updates that are no longer needed to run your pc after its installed but it is still there) an average PC only needs 20% of your files to run your pc and the rest are just archives... ULTIMATE DEFRAG puts that 20% on the faster outermost layer of the disk and the 80% of unnecessary files on the slower innermost layer of the disk, thus creating a significant space gap between your active system files and your sleeping archive files which affects read/seek times of the disk - your slowest pc component. The arm of your HDD will have a smoother little movements on the outer and will not travel across archives on the inner (only when called to access it) giving it less stress and more lifespan. You can even see the files where its actually located on the disk and drag them manually to where you want the files to be placed and move system files which other defraggers cannot that why its called ULTIMATE..
I actually made a Sempron transfer a 1gb file like a boss at 27seconds because of this... beating relatively higher procies which are about a minute or so... (an i7 does this also at 27seconds)
2. Delete your saturated Prefetch Folder - Prefetch files located inside the prefetch folder are files created by windows the first time you open an App like MSword so as to open the app faster the second time you open it INCLUDING ALREADY UNINSTALLED/DELETED APPLICATIONS. It's like creating a key to a door the first time and leaving the key there for your second opening convenience.. The logic behind this is when time passes and there would be a lot of prefetch files... instead of making it faster to open an app... windows would have a hard time finding that prefetch file for the app... just like holding a hundred keys and finding the right one to open a single door. JUST press "windows button + R" then type "Prefetch" then delete everything and reboot your PC... your PC will boot slower at first because it creates new prefetch files but surely its faster on the next and you're giving your pc a new breathe of fresh air.
3. Reset your Paging File - Paging files are like virtual memory in addition to your physical memory (RAM) if your ram is not sufficient enough to hold data, Windows writes the excess data to your HDD (as paging file) so the operation can be completed... Unlike RAMS that gets emptied upon system shutdown, chances are, there would be lots of leftover data on your paging file.. thus, slows down your computer seek speed and overall performance... Thats why there are apps that do time consuming WIPE DISKS for this purpose...
Go to my computer---> right click to properties---> Advanced---> settings (under Performance) ---> Advanced---> Change (under Virtual Memory for XP/Paging File for win7) ---> under DRIVE C: set it to NO PAGING FILE ) reboot your computer.
DO the steps again then set it to "SYSTEM MANAGED FILE) then reboot... your RESET is done..
4. On startups - Disable not just the startup items but also the services... go to msconfig and under SERVICES tab, check "Hide all microsoft services" this should hide all the services Windows need to boot your pc.. then safely uncheck unnecessary services. Personally, I only check the services of my antivirus... of course, that is after safely hiding all ms services... ^_^
5. Use cleanup tools like my lifelong trusted CCleaner... ^_^ get the latest... its free and it does the rest for you...
noted!!!thanks
