Iran has an even better "nuclear option": close, or at least attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz, where nearly 40% of all petroleum trade passes through; doing so will wreak havoc on international markets by shooting up the price of oil, and possibly send the whole planet to another deep recession. That's what the Iranians are planning, if push ever comes to shove.

All this brouhaha over their nuclear weapons program is just laughable; their nuclear capability is still questionable at best; having nuclear reactors, centrifuges, uranium, and putting them together in a working fissionable device is just one part of the whole nuclear weapons deal (and even this part is very complex). In addition to this, they still need to be able to "weaponize" it, like putting it in a ballistic missile (which requires, yes you guessed it, rocket science), and cruise missiles (which requires a complex guidance system). And even if they were able to successfully launch one, it's no guarantee that it'd actually work, or hit its intended target, or avoid interception by US/Israeli ABMs. If they did manage to hit a major city.... well, that'd be the end of Iran as we know it. The Iranians aren't stupid; they won't risk wiping out Israel so that they can further their anti-Zionist agenda. They are far more interested in prolonging their regime, mostly by playing politics through generating uncertainty and profound confusion in the negotiating table.
