Last year, MMFF had an indie film "portion" which did not really attract the viewers that the indie filmmakers deserved. They're doing it again this year.

The more mistakes the MMFF makes, the more Cebu can learn from them and be able to provide indie filmmakers golden opportunities to get recognized.

Academy bats for films based on Filipino literature

Film Academy of the Philippines director general Leo Martinez has proposed that movie adaptations of classic Philippine literature be featured in next year’s Metro Manila Film Festival New Wave (independent) category.

The FAP is one of the annual film fest’s beneficiaries.

“The MMFF committee has already approved this, but we are still looking for funding,” Martinez told Inquirer Entertainment, adding that the National Center for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has agreed to hand out film grants, but he’s still awaiting response from the Quezon City Film Development Council.

Martinez said he commissioned a research five years ago on the kind of literature that students from elementary to college are assigned to read. “I showed the list of novels, poetry and short stories to (National Artist for Literature) Bien Lumbera and eight other teachers of literature and asked them to come up with a shortlist,” Martinez said. “I have the titles with me now.”

Martinez said students would soon be asked to submit screenplays on any of the titles on the short list. The chosen entries would be given film grants.

“We want to build an audience for indie films,” Martinez said. “I noticed that most of the films winning abroad are those that show the souls of their countries. Where else will we get the soul of our country but from our literature? This will not only make students understand literature, this will also help them appreciate it.”

Five independent films were featured in last year’s festival, with Adolf Alix Jr.’s “Presa” awarded best indie film. This year, 10 student shorts and five full-length features will be showcased in the MMFF’s New Wave category.

The FAP is also hoping to launch what it calls “Doon Po sa Amin: A Pride Campaign” in 2012.

The plan, Martinez said, was to ask students to submit essays or screenplays on what they are most proud of in their cities or provinces.

“There are 80 provinces plus 40 big cities – we could make 120 documentaries or films on what we are proud of,” Martinez said. “Sabi ko nga, kaya nagbabangayan wala tayong project for the positive.”

Martinez said he had initial discussions with former Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim about the project and was now convincing the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) to support it.

He explained that the SK was more than capable of financing the project through its sports and cultural fund. “Sadly, this is usually spent on building basketball courts. I said, why don’t we use it for culture?” said Martinez, who is also a Unesco commissioner on culture.

Could you pause and imagine that instead of releasing the Cebu-made Deep Gold months ago, they would have opted to release it in this year's MMFF? I think Deep Gold could have gotten more attention had that happened, even though the movie is crap.

It's too bad this local writer does not realize that Cebu needs to have its own film festival instead of the MMFF.

Is there really a law that forces Cebu to have all its theaters dedicated to MMFF films exclusively?

Time to give indies a big break

I applaud the decision of organizers of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) to also screen full-length independent films and student short films.

The two categories are included in the filmfest’s New Wave Section, which will be shown at Robinson’s Galleria ahead of the mainstream entries.

It’s time we gave indie films the exposure they deserve. Judging from the last Cinemalaya film festival, there is a growing audience for indies, made up mostly of students and young adults.

This is an encouraging development in an industry that appears to have gone stagnant, with fewer films produced each year.

One thing going for indies is that they are cheaper to make than are mainstream films. That’s because they are usually shot digitally, a process that costs less than film. The actors are also paid a pittance, but that hasn’t stopped big-name stars from appearing in indies.

Indies are also the perfect breeding ground for new talent. A growing crop of directors like Brillante Mendoza got their training from independent films.

Filipino-made independent films are consistent winners in international filmfests, showcasing the Filipino’s talent in cinema.

The problem is that indies seldom get booked in commercial theaters, so filmgoers don’t get to appreciate them. Theater owners are not keen on booking indies because they are not big box-office draws. Perhaps the biggest exception is Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank, which made a tidy sum when it was shown commercially.
