Why is it that even under-developed cities ranked higher than Cebu City? The local infrastructure problem is just one of many problems that need solving.
Cebu needs ‘a lot of fixing’
A BUSINESSMAN said yesterday Cebu City needs to fix a lot of things because it is now ranked 475th of 500 cities in the world in urban competitiveness.
Speaking before the 888 News Forum in Marco Polo Plaza, Gordon “Dondi” Joseph, president of the Cebu Business Club and private sector representative to the Metro Cebu Development Coordinating Board (MCDCB), said that based on data they gathered, even cities of some underdeveloped countries are more competitive than Cebu City.
He cited Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, both in Vietnam, that ranked 302nd and 337th, respectively. Phnom Penh in Cambodia ranked 415th, while Yangoon in Myanmar is at 446 in urban competitiveness.
Lack of planning
“So, can you tell me that there’s nothing to be fixed here?” Joseph said.
He said the deterioration in Cebu City is the result of years of the lack of urban and development planning at the local government level.
He said that in international surveys of livable cities in Asia, there is a continuous dropping in the quality of life rating for Cebu City.
“Cebu City has reduced quality of life index and has the highest poverty incidence in the country,” Joseph said.
The businessman also mentioned the controversial corruption and abuse of power cases in Cebu, including Lapu-Lapu City.
He said some of the problems Metro Cebu is facing are the result of the lack of urban and development planning at the LGU level and the bickering of politicians.
Joseph said MCDCB was convened to try to find a voice for development and continuity of development.
Coalition
He said 21 businessmen and civil society leaders in Cebu and the officials of the 13 cities and municipalities of Metro Cebu formed MCDCB as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for livability, governance and prosperity in Cebu.
With the help of the American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Mactan Economic Zone locators, Joseph said they organized meetings with other businessmen and LGU heads to discuss common concerns.
Joseph described MCDCB as an unprecedented coalition of business, government and civil society, a real PPP with a framework for development.

1. replace jeepneys with larger buses
2. roads need sidewalks
3. sidewalks don't need squatters
4. road widening instead of flyovers
aside from the infrastructure that needs a lot of improvement, what needs to be fixed is the political bickering in our local govt. this is one hindrance to devt.
The conditions in Cebu are merely manifestations of the egotistical predisposition of its leaders (both cities and province). I hope the MCDCB will be influential enough to sway these leaders into thinking first of Cebu than themselves.
first, bring back the vigilantes...
i am for mass transport system too.
kanus-a pa kaha na mahuman ni mike rama ag pagbeautify sa city sa?
