I've sat and watched this simple poll escalate into an all out word war.
The utterance of Ian's mentor would hold true... in the application of arts and documentary photography
(which I'm guessing is the field of this mentor). He would do well capturing photographs that will grace
the pages of National Geographic. But would probably flounder trying to fill the spreads of a trendy glossy.
You see, in the application of commercial photography you can hardly get by without doing a bit of
post processing. The client demands it!!! The client doesn't care if you used a handheld meter or a
spot meter and metered it thrice. Then lit the subject with an 5" octogon key light with a 32" shoot-through
umbrella to fill. The client doesn't care about skill... the client wants to get what the client needs and
the client needed it yesterday! And a good photographer would be considered one who can deliver.
And this is a point I've been trying to drive at. Photography is a tool whether it be used an artist's brush
to create something new or to document the world around you. And the applications of photography are
boundless. It is not a holy grail to be handled by a chosen elite.
So in the world of photography it is not who is the lessor or greater photographer but the criteria
demanded by the application. Some photographers would fit in one but would lose out in another.
Ian, it's great that you got an oppurtunity to study under a Master. Many would give alot to have
that oppurtunity. But don't get tunnel-visioned by your mentors teachings. Sure, the guy deserves
respect... he probably earned it. But there are a world of possibilities in photography. Learn what
you can... all you can from your mentor and any mentor you can. But only keep that which will help
you along your path of what you want your photography to be. Strive not to equal your mentor
but strive to be better than.
I think it's time this thread was closed. If anyone wants to have another say you can meet me in the
