also I'm wondering if javascript could access a hardware attached to your computer? If a regular barcode scanner which acts like a keyboard, then ok ra.. but how about hardwares that are not keyboards

it cant access, one reason its not allowed to by standard, samething with XSS it cant by standard!!, most browser blocked js who will access your computer!, it may allow but it requires user's accepting the prompt!!!

Even its obsolete it still running in good condition : ) and faster than .net : P
VB in POS is very POSIBLE can interface with latest model of POS Printer and Cash drawer : P

try using v.b.net! obsolete na nang v.b 6!! hehehehehe

Pagsugod sa tingali og program...bahala unsa nga language.
Ang POS Program, the successful ones, are usable due to its simplicity.
The balance of hardware and software also adds to its efficiency.
Lastly, make it simple enough nga lisud siya i-exploit or buhat og anything malicious.

Last tip, sometimes it is the small points where you'll have to sacrifice optimal code.

@Klave: There are companies still using COBOL but they're changing to either .NET or JAVA because COBOL programmers are getting older and higher pay compared to the new and latest technology. My first job in SG is to convert COBOL to Java. I have also known one City in Cebu that they're changing their language to VB.NET from COBOL. Their COBOL programmers are retiring.

I have been updating my skills with the current trend in programming/scripting languages and I still use VB6. There are companies requires me to work on their software with VB6 as front-end and MySQL as back-end. I have seen some problems with VB6 especially in Windows 7 platform, there are dll and activex that needs to work on and some bugs that needs to correct. Instead of using Win 7 platform, I offered it in Ubuntu and it runs smoothly.

In addition, I have made a POS with Inventory and Accounting integration in VB6, .NET, JAVA STRUTS and PHP. The program includes opening/closing cash drawer, barcode scanner, line display and thermal printer (STAR).

As per of my experience, try to lessen the use of javascript when online.
