MANILA, Philippines - A Philippine Medical Association official on Tuesday said former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo can choose from over 100 doctors in the Philippines that can help her get well from cervical spondylosis and hypoparathyroidism.

Speaking to radio dzMM, PMA governor Leo Olarte rejected the Arroyo camp's claim that the former President cannot get treatment in the Philippines for her illness.

"Kung sila ay magbubukas lang ng Internet, sa website ng Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, merong listahan dun ng more or less 100 doctors na specialists on metabolic diseases. Hindi lang po bone kundi lahat ng sakit na metabolic and endocrine disease na ginagamot," he said.

Olarte, who is an orthopedic surgeon, said the PMA is dismayed by statements from the Arroyo camp that no Filipino doctor could treat the former President's illness.

He pointed out that a lot of foreign patients come to the Philippines to seek treatment for metabolic bone disease.

"Naiinsulto po kami o nadidismaya kami dahil hindi po totoo na walang bone expert dito sa Pilipinas. In fact, we are promoting medical tourism. We have a lot of patients who come to the Philippines to get treatment for metabolic bone disease. Kung sasabihin po ng kampo ng dating pangulong Arroyo na wala tayong metabolic bone experts dito, ito po ay hindi tama," he said.

He added, however, that Arroyo has every right to choose her own doctor and seek the best possible treatment even if it is in another country.

Arroyo has been trying to secure permission from the Department of Justice to leave for abroad since she was placed on a watch list owing to several plunder complaints filed against her.

'X-ray shows Arroyo neck already healing'

In the interview, Olarte said Arroyo is already on the mend according to the latest x-rays taken at the St. Luke's Medical Center in Taguig.

Olarte cited a report of St. Luke's chief radiologist who said Arroyo's spine was showing bone growth.

"That means normal na ang kanyang bone, at nakakatanggap na ng calcium. She is receiving calcium treatment. It means to say that bumalik na ang kanyang normal calcium content sa buto at gumagaling na ang bone niya sa leeg," he said.

GMA breaks silence: I need a cure

    By RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News

MANILA, Philippines - Despite 3 surgeries and a battery of medicines, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's reasons for going under the knife months ago are back.

Breaking her personal silence on her illness, Arroyo said: “The numbness of my fingers and cramps in my legs are coming back. I understand the cramps are an early symptom of hypoparathyroidism. The mineral bone disease may still be there and I want to find out what it is and if there is a cure for it.”

Some of the symptoms she had before her operations have come back, though they may just be part of the atrophy that goes with the long use of heavy braces, she said.

Arroyo said unless she gets proper medical attention, she won't be cured.

"What the medical bulletin said is that there may be a rare bone disease. But without a tetracycline-labelled bone biopsy, they cannot specify what the disease is. You cannot know the cure if you do not know what is to be cured. The tetracyline-labelled biopsy protocol has not been done here,” she explained.

She noted: “I may have an extremely rare metabolic bone disease but how rare and what it is, nobody knows without the tetracycline-labelled bone biopsy."

    I know something is wrong

She said the feeling is hard, not knowing what illness she really has. "I feel like how any human being would feel not knowing the underlying disease. How would you feel if you know something is wrong with you but not knowing what it is? I know something is wrong.”

Arroyo said she chokes with every small pill or small food she has to take in. She used to take 25 to 30 tablets but has foregone half of it, such as pain killers.

"For every tablet I take, I had to gulp down with lots of water or I will choke. So after all those 15 tablets are taken in, I am already so full and so tired," she said.

Arroyo said she could not ask the Singaporean doctors to come here because "the protocol has not been done here. I have an extremely rare metabolic mineral bone disease but how rare and what it is, nobody knows, even the doctors here do not know.”

Arroyo was supposed to see a doctor in Singapore today. She also has an appointment with the doctors in Alecante, Spain scheduled on November 14.

    ___________

i also feel numbness on parts of my body. could it be that im suffering from hypoparathyroidism? i need to have this checked abroad

why does she need to go Spain or other countries just to get checked? why not go directly to the best country to where they can have a real cure of that fake illness.
