SANTA ROSA CITY, Laguna -- Heavily guarded and locked up behind three layers of fences in a police camp, the acknowledged leader of the Guardians sent out a clear message to his followers: Prepare for the May 2007 elections.
The Guardians leader is, of course, former senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan -- a man facing charges of coup d’etat and rebellion -- and the message was read out on Sunday in a ceremony where new members received tattoos on their hands and arms, drank a strange concoction of herbs, spices and brandy, and sang a hymn vowing to fight for their dreams.
Invited to cover the ceremony, this reporter recorded the entire proceedings on video and obtained a copy of an unsigned, two-page memo issued in Honasan’s name in his capacity as “Grand Supremo” or GS of the Philippine Guardians Brotherhood Inc. (PGBI).
The memo, addressed to the group’s executive vice president, executive committee and national, regional, provincial and municipal heads and members, ordered them to conduct an “inventory of all their members and resources,” coordinate with all PGBI members nationwide and overseas in preparation for the polls.
The 12-point directive said that “election is one avenue we can pursue at the national, local and even international levels.”
“Our objectives are clear: Peace, unity, prosperity for our country and people through constitutional and nonviolent means only,” it said.
Honasan’s associates said the typewritten memo, which bore a November 2006 date, was a reproduction of the former senator’s own handwritten directive.
Written in his jail bungalow inside Fort Sto. Domingo in this city, the memo was reproduced for distribution in the country’s various regions, they said.

he may be guilty but for me, it's a clear politicking. tsk tsk i am not defending gringo but ang timing baya dili sakto.
guilty kaayo oi.. if dili pa ngano nag tago2x man cya be sauna pa..
He should be given his own day in court... Honasan may have his own reason for hiding. But to hide is an indication of a guilty mind. He should have come out and face his case long time ago rather than hiding...it's a great shame for a military and former member of the Senate...
