Priest blesses Ponce house amid ghost haunting reports 10/22/2011




AFTER rumors spread about ghosts haunting the Ponce residence in Talisay City, the house was blessed yesterday and framed pictures and statues displayed in the house were burned.

Fr. Roy Cabradilla of Mary's Little Children Community who officiated the blessing said spirits imitate images and hide in statues.

Lone survivor Embrelaince Therjoy “Ember” Ponce and her relatives and the police attended the blessing.

Emmanuel Ponce, an ex-seaman, killed his wife Melinda and children Ellaine Grace, Heather Joy and Emlin Bridge and their housemaid Anastacia Deniega in their house in Palm View Village, Tabunok, Talisay.

Emmanuel also shot himself after the shooting spree. He spared his youngest child Ember.

Thelma Bellones, Emmanuel's relative, said they blessed the house hoping to send away the spirits whom neighbors and barangay tanods said roam the house at night after the gruesome killing last Sunday.

Ciudad hearing moved after DENR reps’ no-show 10/22/2011




BECAUSE of the failure of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to send representatives, the scheduled public hearing on the Ciudad project was postponed to Nov. 22.

Rep. Tomas Osmeña (Cebu City south district), Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young and members of the Cebu City Council were present for the scheduled hearing at the covered court of barangay Apas.

The public hearing is for Fifth Avenue Development Corp.'s application for Environment Compliance Certificate (ECC) for its Ciudad project.

Also yesterday, Fifth Avenue presented in a press conference its traffic plan to ensure that their development will not worsen the traffic situation in the area.

Rep. Osmeña has been vocal against the project and one of his complaints is the traffic congestion on the Banilad-Talamban corridor.

He believes that the development will worsen the situation in the area.

Ciudad is a proposed P1.2-billion commercial establishment to be constructed in a 2.8-hectare lot owned by the Cebu provincial government. The establishment will have a museum, restaurants and department stores and will showcase Cebu's heritage. It is expected to earn P300 million a year. It was supposed to be constructed in 2005 but when the relationship of Osmeña who was then Cebu City mayor and Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia turned sour, Osmeña expressed his vehement opposition to the project.

The city did not issue building permit for the project and it passed an ordinance banning any development on the Ban-Tal corridor.

But the project was revived when Mayor Michael Rama took over as the chief executive of Cebu City.

During yesterday's press con, Fifth Avenue Development Corp. executive vice president Michael Lloyd Dino said the traffic concerns should not hinder the city from moving forward.

The developer also promised to construct roads for the city, which would mean a savings of around P280 million.

Aside from that, Ciudad developers also promise to provide jobs to hundreds of city residents.

“Ciudad will be fully funded by the private sector. They have nothing to lose, only to gain,” Dino said.

But Osmeña does not believe Fifth Avenue's promise to provide jobs and decongest traffic in the Ban-Tal corridor.

He said the program of work it submitted to the provincial government had no allocation for the road opening.

He pointed out that a single resto bar that used to operate in the area caused tremendous traffic.

“How much more road congestion will it cause when construction begins for a large-scale development such as Ciudad?” Osmeña asked.

Osmeña also said Fifth Avenue is giving false hopes when it promised to create 2,800 jobs for barangay Apas residents because the developer couldn’t dictate businesses to hire just those applicants from the barangay. /CORRESPONDENT KATREENA BISNAR

Danao official faces charges for personal info file 10/22/2011




The Danao City Prosecutor's Office found probable cause to charge Danao City Administrator Jesus “Don” Durano with falsification of documents for allegedly making “untruthful statements” in his Personal Data Sheet (PDS).

The case stemmed from the complaint filed by Jesus’ brother and Vice Mayor Ramon “Nito” Durano III and the Danao City Council against him.

Jesus allegedly provided false details in his PDS, a requirement for his appointment as city administrator. He stated in his data sheet that he was never charged with any criminal offense in court.

The complainants said Jesus was facing charges of grave coercion, obstruction of justice, and resistance and disobedience to a person in authority before the Municipal Trial Court.

Acting Danao City Prosecutor Rodulf Joseph Val Carillo gave Jesus a chance to submit a counter-affidavit to refute the allegations but he did not. /Reporter Ador Vincent Mayol

Suroy south Cebu trail wows 300 tourists 10/22/2011




Around 300 foreign and local tourists were treated to the sights, taste and culture of southern Cebu as this year's “Suroy-Suroy sa Sugbo the Southern Heritage Trail” kicked off yesterday.

The 150-year-old Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Church in Minglanilla town was the tour's first stop where the guests were given the chance to appreciate the antique items displayed at the church such as a palu-palu (a short bat for beating clothes in washing them), an old wooden table, Japanese money, a mirror, a wooden fork, kitchen utensils like a black round plate, spoons, pitcher, glass and fruit tray among others.

Later, the guests were treated to a carabao race at the Minglanilla Central School grounds.

And like previous Suroy-Suroy organized by the Cebu Provincial Government headed by Gov. Gwen Garcia, the guests were welcomed in every town or city included in the tour with a cultural dance and a song number.

Nancy Cortes, a 54-year-old balikbayan, said her sister-in-law convinced her to join the tour because it’s a “nice” experience.

“Nindot kaayo (It’s very nice),” Nancy said of her first day of the two-day tour.

In Naga City, the tourists also visited the 182-year-old church St. Francis of Assissi.

Another first-time tour participant, Wolfgang, a German national and a senior citizen, found the tour very exciting.

He said that he found out about the “tour” in the newspaper advertisement.

“I saw the ads. This tour was nicely organized. It’s my first time to join this kind of tour,” Wolfgang said.

Cebu Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale, Cebu Provincial Board Member Julian Daan, Cebu Provincial Police Director Patrocino Comendador and Police Regional Director Marcelo Garbo also joined the tour.

The guests were given the chance to taste the delicacies in the south like the pan Bisaya (Visayan bread), puto balanghoy, Valenciana, biko, bud-bud, bitso-bitso, among others.

Lechon (roasted pig) was also served in San Fernando town. And the guests had a sumptuous lunch in Sibonga town before they visited the Simala Church.

The tourists also visited Argao, Dalaguete, Alcoy and Boljoon town.

Today, the guests will tour Oslob, Santander, Samboan, Ginatilan, Malabuyioc, Alegria, Badian, Kawasan and Moalboal.

Meanwhile, Governor Garcia also invited 50 members of different gangs in Cebu, who signed a peace treaty in Minglanilla town.

The gang members came from the Bloods, Crips, and Hardcore.

The treaty aimed to stop hostilities between the gang members.

Aside from the the gang leaders, the treaty was also signed by Minglanilla Vice Mayor Elanito Peña, Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale and Association of Barangay Councils president Manolo Delgado. /By Rhea Ruth V. Rosell, Correspondent

Archbishop Palma says mom uniting point of family 10/22/2011




IT was one of the most emotional moment of the prince of the Church of Cebu as he remembered his late mother, who passed away early this month.

Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma was teary-eyed as he officiated the Mass for his late mother Esther yesterday morning.

Some 200 priests also attended the Mass as part of the closing activity of their annual retreat.

“She's beautiful not only in her looks but also in her simple ways of loving,” Palma said during the Mass.

He compared his late mother to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose beauty came from her love for others.

Palma's mother suffered from a kidney ailment and died last Oct. 13. She was 83 years old.

“She is the uniting point for all of us,” Palma said.

She left behind six children, 21 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Palma left for Manila yesterday afternoon to attend to the funeral service of his mother who will be buried on Sunday.

Though her mother only graduated elementary, Palma said that his mother “exudes a lot of wisdom” and was never at a loss in raising them, after their father died early.

Palma said he recalled his mother also doing farm chores, which helped made the family closer.

Despite the loss of his mother, Palma said he was still thankful because he knew that his mother was happy with the company of the creator.

“The morning she died, I cried in my morning prayer. But I’m still thankful to the Lord for the gift of my mother,” he said

Palma recalled when his mother was in the hospital on medication, and he encouraged her to eat after she refused to take more medicine and IV fluids.

“She told me that she just wanted to rest. I haven't understood that until she died. Her wish is already fullfilled,” Palma said.

He also contributed his dedication to serve for the Lord with his mother.

When he became a priest and a bishop, he said that many people would ask his mother of her devotion for her son.

“She said that it's not her devotion, but of priesthood as the gift of the Lord. She said that it’s because of the Lord and not because of her. I would never forget that,” Palma said. /Reporter CAndeze R. Mongaya

GYM ISSUE


CEBU City Councilor Jose Daluz III yesterday said that Cebu City's wellness program was authorized by the Civil Service Commission.

Daluz also corrected the misinformation that their enrollment at the Cebu Holiday Gym and Spa was overpriced.

He said the P12, 000 monthly rate mentioned in media report was the gym's student rate.

“I have gym brochures to show and prove that the rates (we availed of) were not overpriced,” said Daluz, whom Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young designated to speak on the issue in behalf of the other council members.

Quoting CSC memorandum circular no. 8 series of 2011, Daluz said elected officials and heads of constitutional bodies, bureaus, departments and even state colleges are entitled to avail of gym privileges “in order to develop a healthy and alert workforce.” /Chief of Reporters Doris C. Bongcac

FORMER Liloan Councilor Lucelito Pilapil took his oath as vice mayor yesterday before Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia at the Capitol.

Pilapil, who is the first councilor, replaced the late Liloan vice mayor Merelito “Boy” Surita who succumbed to colon cancer last month.

The oath-taking was witnessed by Liloan Mayor Duke Frasco, who said he is expecting Pilapil to continue the “good” works that Surita has started.

“Kinahanglan sad gyud nga iyang ipadayon ang maayong buhat sa vice mayor nako sauna. I expect a lot of hard work,” he said.

Surita, 57, was a “big loss” to Liloan town and the Barug Alang sa Kauswagan ug Demokrasya (Bakud) party.

In a separate interview, Pilapil assured that there will be smooth workflow with them.

Pilapil and Frasco ran under Democracy for the Independent Liberal Conservative (DILC) in the last May 2010 elections.

Councilor Edna Cala also took her oath before Gov. Garcia yesterday after Pilapil.
