yes its that much better in low light than the 1.8...

the newer 24-105 L4 with IS should also be considered.
unless the 2.8 is a must for you...
Bitaw, noh. Naa na man diay 24-105 4L IS. I checked some reviews and they are saying that in some tests it exceeds the performance of the 24-70 2.8L Some, not all. Plus, it's lighter.

Main drawback is the price. It's a little more expensive than the 24-70 2.8L but you get IS. Still, IS won't freeze action. Others are saying that you won't really need IS at this focal range, except, perhaps, if you are shooting at night subjects that hardly move, like buildings.

I have no personal experience with the new 24-105 4L IS but I liked very much the 24-70 2.8L.

Anyway, I still have to pay for my 70-200 4L so there is enough time for the prices to settle, but I agree it's a great walk-around lens - which what this thread is all about.

FWIW, the 24-105 is now cheaper than the 24-70 here in the US. Regarding the weight, I think they're very close it's a non-issue. BTW, I think the IS for this focal range for my shaky hands.

OT: my nikon wishlist AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED and AF-S VR Nikkor 300 f/2.8G IF-ED but i think this would remain a wish for now unless i sell my car and start walking with one of these lenses.

10.5 fisheye is also a great walk around lens to keep for those fun shots on the road.
