the recent widespread floods in luzon is not a sign of the entire island sinking. however, it is a sign that a lot of things are happening; some of which could have been addressed to prevent something like this from happening.
1.) drainage systems. the river systems mostly of the pampanga, zambales, tarlac and parts of bulacan are heavily silted because of the lahar from pinatubo. this allows them to carry less water than pre-eruption estimates. this should have been dredged a long time ago.
as the catch-basin for a number of riverine systems in the southern tagalog area, laguna lake is also heavily silted, creating problems to the eastern side of the metro namely muntinlupa and taguig.
2.) increased rainfall. with the increased intensity of storms most probably caused by global warming. while we cannot do anything about how much rain will fall, we know that something like this was happening all the more when ondoy hit. global warming is something that we can do something about too, albeit on a concerted and protracted effort.
3.) path of the storm. luzon has always been a "welcome mat" when it comes to storms, together with the bicol region and eastern visayas. we know this as a fact, and therefore should put up some measures to be prepared when storms strike.

Ambot anang mga tawhana, unsa kaha ang ilang kahimtang sa mga umaabot nga panahon.
