When we were living with our grandparents in Pampanga, I remember seeing my grandfather's World War 2 book. One of the photos inside was that of a German soldier in the Eastern Front (against the Russians) who was eating a hot meal but he was all covered with mud and melting snow. I tried to simulate that vision with this figure. I tried to Google for the same photo but I can't find it using "muddy German soldier Eastern Front".

bai, wip pa ni siya? or finished na? anyways, the figure you are working on is typical of the waffen ss infantry on the eastern front wearing a fur lined anorak, reversible winter trousers (white with mouse grey or camouflage on the other side) and special felt and leather winter boots. this kind of winter clothing was most commonly used by he 3rd ss division "totenkompf" during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd battles of kharkov. try to give a variety of shades between the pants and the anorak.

my 12" action figure assigned to the 3rd ss division "totenkompf" with more or less the same get-up as your 1/35 figure.

@teoding: Human na. I don't think I'm ready to work with photo-etched parts. I received a a reference from messerchtmitt and pwede diay pinagahi na papel gamiton.

I based it loosely on the cover art.

It's difficult looking for color references online. Mostly black and white. I don't want to invest in a book about World War 2 military uniforms. Kung naa free e-book na ma-download mas maayo

^^^ if your concern is the p.e. part that is to be used for the leather sling of the kar-98 rifle, then your best alternative is a 4mm masking tape. fold or slice it into half and it should be the right width for 1/35 scale gun slings. once painted, the natural texture of the masking tape would be more or less the same with actual leather.

@teoding: Thanks. I just realized that building and painting 'realistic' figures - while following the same principles as those of sci-fi or fantasy figures - differ in that there's no room for inaccuracies. I can create my own color scheme for a Warhammer 40K Space Marine and unless I'm playing a tabletop game, nobody would really mind as long as I can explain that he belongs to one of the lost chapters but if I color a WW2 German soldier pink, I'm sure daghan mag-alburto.

Case in point, while reading Ratz, Rods and Rust, one of the guest modelers featured is Chuck Doan. I can't believe that the photos I saw were dioramas. Kung naa mga god modelers, usa na ni tawhana. Check out some of his work here:

actually, a big part of the fun in modelling realistic military themes is the research. you will learn a lot as you model different subjects. maayo na gani karon kay naa na ang internet. unlike before you depend on books and modelling magazines.
