I wouldn't say that totally...you should look at artbooks made from 3d cartoons..you should check out Cartoon Brew more often jnom. 2d is the skeleton for 3d cartoons only crazy and mindless executives, directors and studios. Brad Bird's core crew were 2d animators and designers..Lou Romano, Teddy Newton, Tony Fucile etc. Tony Fucile who i think is not a quite knowledgeable in 3d softwares were the one together with Brad Bird and other guys goes around the studio checking 3d animator's output..traditional animation is the anchor of 3d animation..you can never say that 3d can live without 2d..perhaps in terms of technology but never in principles and techniques.
In my opinion 2d artists have a much longer range if you don't let them animate they can surely draw and you can place them as story artists or character designers which is vital in creating a 3d cartoon. 2d will always be there.

check out these guys..i don't know if they're teaching animation and even if they are..i don't think they're doing it full time.
I think that's the reason why 3d cartoons suck big time these days.
3D cartoons are overrated..for me .though some spark some attention but it is never really that memorable only a few of them really stand out. 3D is lucrative in the fields of special effects and video games. but taking a deeper look..i think it's not the platform that's actually overrated i think it's the stories that are overrated. People are focused too much on how impressive the effects are done how the textures are realistic..but the bottomline is you can never hide an ugly story.
