ROCCAT Isku gaming Keyboard review:
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/review...roduction.html
User Experience and Conclusion
First and foremost the Roccat ISKU is a comfortable keyboard to type on. The large palm rest does exactly what it is designed to do and the key travel distance chosen by Roccat feels great. The keyboard is also very quiet to type on and the use of plastic throughout ensures that it is a very light device. Thankfully Roccat have used some large rubber feet on the base of the ISKU which means that despite its low weight the board remains solid, in position, on our desk.
In addition to some decent build quality the ISKU is also well designed. All of the standard keys are in a natural position and the M/T zones are easily within reach of our left hand as well as being in a familiar area for those who have used a gaming board before. This means we get an optimal typing experience and as well as great performance in gaming. Added to this the board is aesthetically pleasing and the LED lighting will be appreciated by those who game in low light conditions.
There are however some minor issues with the ISKU, some areas that will disappoint some users. First and most obvious is that this is not a mechanical keyboard. Currently many of their competitors offer mechanical boards but we are still to see something similar from Roccat... this isn't an issue however if we are going into the purchase not needing or wanting a mechanical board. Next we have the lack of USB port or audio pass-through, something which is common on quality gaming boards (though there are wiring channels under the board for our headset cables). We also feel that many users prefer braided cables, something which isn't present on the ISKU or Kone[+] for that matter.
All of the above can be put down to preference however something which will be an issue for all users is the LED desgn used on the ISKU. We feel that the choice not to light the Record, media or brightness button on this board is disappointing but a more serious issue is the visibility of the keys at various angles. On the ISKU when sitting looking directly down on the board the LEDs are perfect, the more we move back into our chair towards a normal sitting position the more the top area of each symbol begins to dim. By the time we sit in a natural gaming/typing position the top half of the symbols on many of the number keys are gone.
Moving back to the positives, the ISKU software is excellent. It is easy to use, well set out and responsive which allows the user to quickly configure the device to their liking. In addition to this Roccat also offer some fantastic advanced controls and we love the voice feedback which their software, both for keyboard and mouse, provides. Having the Roccat voice confirm a change of profile, DPI etc is great.
Speaking of multiple devices this brings us to Roccat Talk. This feature is something which is in the early stages, offering some key functionality for now such as the ability to switch mouse DPI from the keyboard but the potential is there to expand. In doing so we would also like to see Roccat bring device control panels together either in the existing design or via a Roccat Talk panel so that we can configure our mouse and keyboard in the same application. Roccat Talk FX also has potential and could work very well with amBX equipment to further enhance the immersion of our games.
So that brings us to value. At 79.99 pounds/euros the ISKU sits well below models such as the Logitech G19 but also in with some stiff competition from the likes of Razer, SteelSeries and a few of the smaller players. Decent value given the features and performance but at £10-15 less the ISKU would really impress.
Summary
Lovely to type/game on, some great advanced gaming features and excellent software package all combine to create a desirable gaming product.
