One Terabyte per platter hard drives isn't breaking news these days, but Hitachi GST has put a twist on things by launching several new models with a single 1TB platter in them. The new drives are also available in smaller sizes, but this is where things get strange, as despite being a single 1TB platter drive, some of the models will only offer 250 or 320GB of usable storage space.

It's pretty clear that the hard drive market has reached a stage where the drive makers are wasting a lot of potential storage space on hard drive and we end up with a pricing scheme that doesn't reflect the actual value of the storage space. Today a 160, 250, 320 and 500GB hard drive can be had for the same price and in one case we're looking at twice the capacity for the same model from the same manufacturer. No wonder there's so much consolidation going on in the industry, as there's really not much money to be made from hard drives these days.



Hitachi GST's new models include the 1TB Deskstar 5K1000.B which is a 5,400rpm drive with 32MB cache and a claimed power saving of 23 percent compared to the new Desktar 7K1000.D. The 7K1000.D on the other hand is available in 250, 320, 500, 750GB and 1TB sizes and as the name suggests we're looking at a 7,200rpm drive here, again with 32MB of cache. Both models do of course sport the SATA 6Gbps interface and they also comes with what Hitachi GST calls HiVERT which the company claims reduces idle power by up to 15 percent.

Alongside the two new consumer models, Hitachi GST also launched a pair of new CinemaStar DVR drives, namely the 5K1000.B and 7K1000.D. The biggest difference here compared to the Deskstar drives is that they've been optimised for video recording and playback. Both models comes in capacities from 250GB to 1TB and features' what Hitachi GST calls CoolSpin technology, as well as HiVERT, 32MB cache and a MTBF of 1.2 million hours and a slightly lower noise level than the desktop equivalent models.

i agree its not a breaking news since WD, Samsung and Seagate went 1st making 1tb harddrives.

^^That's 1TB/PLATTER which wd, samsung and seagate hasnt marketed yet. These models may operate close to velociraptor speeds.
