THE executive committee of the Metro Manila Film Festival has granted Star Cinema’s request to pull out one of its two approved entries, the Vhong Navarro-Toni Gonzaga comedy flick, “Tanging Pamilya,” from the December event.
The decision was finalized in a meeting on June 14.
Star Cinema’s other entry, the Judy Ann Santos-Ryan Agoncillo drama “Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo,” remains in the running.
The slot of “Tanging Pamilya” was originally given to a Unitel production, “Blackout,” directed by Ato Bautista. Tony Gloria, Unitel president and chief executive officer, “declined” the invitation because he said the company had decided on a Nov. 1 playdate for the suspense thriller topbilled by Robin Padilla.
Thus a slot was left open for “Super Noypi,” produced by M&Q, which is also under Regal Entertainment. Lily Monteverde, Regal executive producer, told Inquirer Entertainment in a phone interview that she was pleased with the outcome.
Monteverde is producing four out of 10 entries: “Super Noypi,” “Zsazsa Zaturnnah,” “Mano Po 5: Gua Ai Di” and “Shake, Rattle & Roll 8.” Of this, she said, “It only shows our commitment to the industry.” Less than six months ago, as a result of a controversy over awards, Monteverde threatened to boycott this year’s festival.
“I was very emotional at the time,” Monteverde explained. “Wala na ’yon. (I’m over that.) I’m glad because the committee followed the guidelines. It just so happened that my film was next in line.”
Orly Ilacad of Octo Arts/Canary/Virgin also has multiple entries—“Enteng Kabisote 3,” “Karma” (formerly “Pagkagat ng Dilim”) and “Short Time.”
New producers have one entry each: CM Films’ “Batang Maynila,” starring Cesar Montano, and Violett Films’ “Tatlong Baraha,” headlined by Lito Lapid.
According to the MMFF execom, the Magic 10 includes three fantasy flicks (“Enteng,” “Zsazsa” and “Super Noypi”), two action (“Bata” and “Tatlo”), two horror (“Karma” and “Shake”), two drama (“Mano Po 5” and “Kasal”) and one comedy (“Short Time”).
