Livelier MassKara Festival up this October

The 32nd MassKara Festival on October 1-19, with the theme, “Celebrating the New Icons of Bacolod” will be livelier with more improvements and more innovations, Mayor Evelio Leonardia said.

Leonardia made this announcement at the switch-on ceremonies of the MassKara Billboard of Lights Friday night (September 2) to officially launch the countdown to the 19-day festival.

Also attending the switch-on ceremonies were Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson and Councilors Em Ang, Caesar Distrito, Roberto Rojas, Homer Bais and Carlos Jose Lopez, San Sebastian Cathedral rector Fr. Felix Pasquin, festival director Eli F. J. Tajanlangit, and representatives of the major sponsors of the festival.

Leonardia said the MassKara Festival this year will focus solely on the festival since the city’s Charter Day, which was usually held Oct. 19, had been celebrated last June 18 already.

He explained that the change of schedule was decided upon after documents from the archives of the House of Representatives and those sent by the National Historical Commission showed that the birthday of Bacolod was actually June 18, 1938 and not October 19 as it had been believed before.

Tajanlangit, on the other hand, said the Billboard of Lights is one of the three MassKara installations the organizers are putting up this year in the plaza and in the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) to attract more foreign and local tourists to these areas.

On October 1, the plaza bandstand will be illuminated with light shows, while on October 9, Charlie Co and his fellow artists will set up floating artworks at the fountain area of the BCGC.

There will also be a mask-lantern contest for inmates of 18 jail districts in Negros Occidental, he said, adding that the giant mask-lanterns will be hung around the plaza as another attraction.

The video presentations for the light shows at the bandstand, floating artwork at the BCGC, and the mask-lanterns on trees at the plaza were all met with excitement by the audience on Friday’s launching ceremonies, Tajanlangit said.

He said the new attractions at the plaza are aimed at repositioning it and bringing back the focus to it as the “heart of the festival.”

These are the areas where tourists and visitors can go every night and have their pictures taken, he said.

The 2011 MassKara festival is going to be a festival of lights. Every night the people will see light shows especially at the Bacolod plaza, he added.

He added that the La Consolacion College, which had participated in 2004, will return with very innovative giant MassKara puppets.

“There will be about 30 to 45 of these puppets that will dance in the streets for the Electric MassKara, and the streetdance competition,” he said.

The barangay streetdance competitions will have 15 entries only to make it more manageable, while the Electric MassKara will have 10 participating entries, but they are getting inquiries from institutions that want to join as non-competing entries, he said.*
