    St. Batholomew
    (Feast Day Aug 24 )

Saint Bartholomew is one of the Twelve Apostles, mentioned sixth in the three Gospel lists (Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:14), and seventh in the list of Acts (1:13). The name (Bartholomaios) means "son of Talmai" which was an ancient Hebrew name.

Besides being listed as an Apostle, he is not otherwise mentioned in the New Testament. At least not under the name Bartholomew: many ancient writers, and Catholic tradition have identified Bartholomew as Nathaniel in the Gospel of John (John 1:45-51, and 21:2).

The Gospel passage read at Mass on the feast of Saint Bartholomew is precisely this passage from John (1:45-51) where Nathaniel is introduced to Jesus by his friend Phillip, and Jesus says of him "Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him (1:47)."

We are presented with the Apostle's character in this brief and beautiful dialogue with the Lord Jesus. He is a good Jew, honest and innocent, a just man, who devotes much time to quiet reflection and prayer - "under the fig tree (1:4" - and has been awaiting the Messiah, the Holy One of God.

At Jesus' mention that "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you (1:4," Nathaniel responded "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel (1:49)!"

Being "a true child of Israel," Nathaniel was a man well-read in the Scriptures and knew what they said of the Messiah and where he would come from. This is why he is skeptical of Phillip's claim that Jesus is the Messiah, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth (1:46)?"

But Nathaniel was lacking "duplicity" - that is, his heart was undivided, his intentions pure - his openness to reality was always ready to recognize and surrender to the truth when he encountered it. He remained open to his friend Phillip's invitation to "Come and see (1:46)."

In encountering Jesus and hearing His words, he found himself face to face with the Truth Himself, and, like John the Baptist's leap in his mother's womb at the Lord's presence, Nathaniel's words lept out of his own heart in a clear and simple confession of faith, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"

Jesus, in Matthew 5:8, says, "Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God." In Nathaniel we have an example of the pure man who sees - recognizes - God when confronted with Him, and on seeing Him believes in Him, and upon believing in Him follows Him.

Nothing is known for sure about the life of Nathaniel/Bartholomew after the Ascension of Jesus. But tradition has it that he preached in the East and died a martyr's death in Armenia, being flayed alive for having won converts to the Lord Jesus.

St. Bartholomew is the patron of: bookbinders, butchers, corn-chandlers, dyers, glovers, furriers, leather-workers, plasterers, shoemakers, tailors, tanners, vine-growers, and Florentine salt and cheese merchants. He is invoked against nervous disorders and twitchings.

O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me. Glory be to the Father, etc.

[Say one Our Father and three Hail Marys after each of the following nine salutations in honor of the nine Choirs of Angels]

    1. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Seraphim may the Lord make us worthy to burn with the fire of perfect charity.
    Amen.

    2. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Cherubim may the Lord grant us the grace to leave the ways of sin and run in the paths of Christian perfection.
    Amen.

    3. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Thrones may the Lord infuse into our hearts a true and sincere spirit of humility.
    Amen.

    4. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Dominations may the Lord give us grace to govern our senses and overcome any unruly passions.
    Amen.

    5. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Virtues may the Lord preserve us from evil and falling into temptation. Amen.

    6. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Powers may the Lord protect our souls against the snares and temptations of the devil.
    Amen.

    7. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Principalities may God fill our souls with a true spirit of obedience. Amen.

    8. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Archangels may the Lord give us perseverance in faith and in all good works in order that we may attain the glory of Heaven.
    Amen.

    9. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Angels may the Lord grant us to be protected by them in this mortal life and conducted in the life to come to Heaven.
    Amen.

Say one Our Father in honor of each of the following leading Angels: St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael and our Guardian Angel.

    Concluding prayers:

O glorious prince St. Michael, chief and commander of the heavenly hosts, guardian of souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits, servant in the house of the Divine King and our admirable conductor, you who shine with excellence and superhuman virtue deliver us from all evil, who turn to you with confidence and enable us by your gracious protection to serve God more and more faithfully every day.

Pray for us, O glorious St. Michael, Prince of the Church of Jesus Christ, that we may be made worthy of His promises.

Almighty and Everlasting God, Who, by a prodigy of goodness and a merciful desire for the salvation of all men, has appointed the most glorious Archangel St. Michael Prince of Your Church, make us worthy, we ask You, to be delivered from all our enemies, that none of them may harass us at the hour of death, but that we may be conducted by him into Your Presence. This we ask through the merits of
    Jesus Christ Our Lord.

    Amen.

The Chaplet of St. Michael is a wonderful way to honor this great Archangel along with the other nine Choirs of Angels. What do we mean by Choirs? It seems that God has created various orders of Angels. Sacred Scripture distinguishes nine such groupings: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Powers, Virtues, Principalities, Archangels and Angels (Isa. 6:2; Gen. 3:24; Col. 1:16; Eph. 1:21; Rom. 8:38 ). There may be more groupings but these are the only ones that have been revealed to us. The Seraphim is believed to be the highest Choir, the most intimately united to God, while the Angelic Choir is the lowest.

The history of this Chaplet goes back to a devout Servant of God, Antonia d'Astonac, who had a vision of St. Michael. He told Antonia to honor him by nine salutations to the nine Choirs of Angels. St. Michael promised that whoever would practice this devotion in his honor would have, when approaching Holy Communion, an escort of nine angels chosen from each of the nine Choirs. In addition, for those who would recite the Chaplet daily, he promised his continual assistance and that of all the holy angels during life.

"Unhappily, our hearts are not sufficiently pure and free from all earthly affections. If you take a very clean and very dry sponge, and soak it in water, it will be filled to overflowing; but if it is not dry and clean, it will take up nothing. In like manner, when the heart is not free and disengaged from the things of the earth, it is in vain that we steep it in prayer; it will absorb nothing." - St. John Vianney

I can't sum them up into 5. All of them have helped me along the way. But the first two has brought a radical change in me. Though I didn't ask for it, they knew that I badly need it! HaHa. It just came spontaneously and no one influenced me! Life Lesson: Let the person discover it's own desires and longings in life. I was,and yet till now been pushed to do this and that, be like this, like that because it's for my own good. Though we are taught to listen to them (Old peeps) for they knew everything, and they have been through a lot of experiences. My response? I would quote "Experiences teaches us that mature years brings knowledge but not necessarily wisdom." It would be better if I was asked "What do you want in life?" but I was not. Time? "There's no time for that!" We are indeed slaves of time. Also, our responsibility holds us up to go opposite to what we really wanted in life. Now, here comes the test. If we really put God first and rely to His divine will, why worry? Also, lets be docile to the Divine will, to the Holy Spirit. My awakening, I would say, that it was the work of the Holy Spirit, also with the help and intercession of our Blessed Mother and my beloved Saint Therese. If we really put our trust and confidence to them (Holy Trinity) then...All is well. Sufferings or Consolation...may it done to me according to your will.

Be like a sand; small, feeble, humble... and let the Divine Breeze of God flew you to where He wants you to be.
Humility, Love, Confidence, Self-surrender, Docile, Poor, Child...if we posses all these then God's power would be made perfect in us.

    Here's my long list

    1. Blessed Mother ~ Repost nalang ko @koral She led me back to Jesus when I was almost totally consumed by darkness a long time ago.

    2. St. Therese of Lisieux ~Little sweet princess of God. Converted after I have read her Autobio "Story of a Soul" .Thanks to the tarpaulin at Seminario Mayor de San Carlos. A tarpaulin of her last yer in preparation of her Feast made me curious about her. "kinsa man jd nang bayhana ba!, posing man kaau"

    3. St. Clare ~ Mother Clare, you renounced the world, it's richness and all it's vanities to serve God. I long to imitate you, for it is in God that we find our true happiness in life!

    4. St. Teresa of Avila ~Mother Teresa, you taught me how to pray and to be with God in Silence. You never fail to make me laugh whenever I read your writings. You always say that "I am stupid!" How humble you are!

    5. St. John of the Cross ~Fray Juan, you taught me never to be afraid of the Dark Night, if we long to imitate Jesus then we should also imitate too His sufferings and trials. "My child this darkness isn't emptiness, for here I mold your heart unto my image painfully you long to see"

    6. St. Anthony of Padua ~You never fail me whenever I ask you to find this or that. O Saint of the the lost things, whenever I go astray and got lost of the path that God has provided me, please grab me and lead me home again to God.

--I will edit this post later, I got to go

    Good day mayts!

@ All .. thanks for your inputs and sharing !!

I will share a story about St. Michael the Archangel .

Sister Julia Kim from South Korea was recieving Holy Communion when everything stop the moment the celebrating priest was about to consecrate the altar bread . The host elevated and travelled airborne towards Kim . It was said according to a lot of witnesses that it was St. Michael the Archangel who transported it because the celebrating priest was not in the state of grace .

Anyway .... as what my father told me about Msgr Camomot , he was a great man . Na under siya during his formation years in San Carlos Seminary . He also died a virgin hehehe . A man of great command against evil , feared by the devil as an excorcist extraordinaire .
