I tried trekking with the Vibram KSO. Very good traction even when your feet is underwater. Tried crossing a river with it once and it felt like suction cups on rocks and sand.
Downside is since it is a minimalist shoe it gets wet easily and the material isn't exactly fast drying. Ended up climbing a hill in soggy VFFs.
The sole material extends to the sides so you have adequate protection. If you don't like the feeling of overly thin material the KSO and other VFFs that have a 3mm or more layer in the sole provides a reasonable comfortable ground impact protection.
Save for the Classic & Sprint, running on hard concrete or asphalt road is ok with most models if di kaayo ka anad. The lack of the additional 3mm layer on the Classic & Sprint gives you a harder impact on the above surfaces. Then again, barefoot running is all about
grace and form.
