Seriously, no need to start flaming yet. Like the article said, China has only ONE carrier and it HASN'T formed a battle group. China still needs to spend hundreds of millions if not billions to to create such a battle group as well as train crew to work the carrier and the planes. Heck, a single destroyer could sink it if it was caught alone at sea as it has no point defenses or anti/ship/aircraft/missile missiles let alone aircraft at the moment. Right now its just a very expensive piece of floating metal. The united states is still far ahead in most technologies as well as experience in operating these classes of ships. So until China preps a crew (few hundred million), preps a protection group of destroyers and cruisers (a few hundred million/billion), preps a few more carriers (a few more billion), China is just trying to show off and use this a a propaganda tool. Maybe in the future after China has set up these battle groups we may have something o worry about if their intentions are hostile.

They plan to have battle groups ready by 2020 not including this experimental unit. And they are building diesel attack subs and nuclear ballistic ones like mad, honestly they dont need the carrier. Propaganda unit lang cguro na or special missions like what Russia does. And they can pretty much afford battle groups in the billions, they're defence budget is rising like mad from the economic boom. Unlike our scenario that debt is rising from a political boom!

Then again, they dont need guns to own the Spartly's their currency is good enough for our governments open hands and hungry pockets.

Even if there are similar/parallel circumstances, the fact that so many things have changed since the 1910's and the 1930's will prompt this speculation to fall flat on its face.

A Chinese invasion of the Philippines is highly unlikely. While it may be possible, there'd be very little gain or none at all for the Chinese, politically or economically. Also, the United States, Japan, South Korea, etc. would have to step in, but not because they're interested in our sovereignty; Chinese domination of the Philippines will also mean domination of key South China sea trade routes, which is not in the best interests of the Japanese, and ultimately the United States.

If they did invade, yeah, they'll be able to bomb key cities and force our military and government to surrender, but then, they'll have to deal with the problem with occupation. 100 million Filipinos v.s. a billion chinese may not sound like a fair fight, but we'll give them hell through a brutal guerrilla campaign. See Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and Vietnam War for examples.
