I'm very aware that there are kids out there who strives for the real thing.... a kid hears The Used over the radio.... loves the sound, then finds out about the old school stuff which purists holds dear. Then this kid changes his opinions about The Used.... he starts hating the mass media.. and the word "mainstream".

For me, I think they're just striving to be COOL....... me, I love music.
Good point EZRA and I agree with you when you say that there are kids out there who, for one time listens to a band/song on the radio (ex. The Used, Matchbook Romance, Hawthorne Heights, etc.) and loved it, and after hearing some opinions/comments from the so called purist immediately changes their views on that band. I think its uncool and they are all just pretending to be cool and I pity them coz they deprive themselves the music that they used to love coz of the opinions of the so called purist. Its ok to deprive yourself of that but bashing the entire genre/other genre just to be cool is not.

Basta for me music is music maski unsa nga genre pa na cya basta kung ganahan ka paminaw ayaw ug kaulaw. Whats the point of depriving yourself sa music nga imo nagustuhan tungod lang sa opinion sa uban? wla dba.

    @Die_trying
The fact that those emo kids are living under the illusion of being cool doesn't give you the right to call them sissy ass faggots.

Sick and tired? Why is it such a big deal to you anyway?

And by the way, Avril didn't ruin the image of punk rock. MTV did. Some of avril's songs are good too, albeit they aren't punk rock.

@EZRA - im an hxc kid since i was in highschool (1996 to be exact)...so im proud to say i was there when the emo community is finally gaining recognition since it started on the year 1985 - 1988. Lead by Ian Mckaye of MINOR THREAT...
..i got into, fugazi, gorilla biscuits, rites of spring etc.. who by the way are one of the pioneers of the modern "true emo"
Im more into hxc/punk back then, and im a bigfan of the dc hxc scene..which if you dont know is the mecca of the "real emo scene". I cant say im a purist because im open minded to other subgenres of hxc and metal. But it just pisses me off to desecrate the beliefs of those who were true to this sh*t since it started. Tagging themselves this and that not knowing any idea about it.
They say music is your soul..so if you listen to those fakers = (insert result here).

im not dissing the mainstream kabadooshka just to be cool (im the unCOOLEST guy you ever know, promise LOLx), WTH i dont care if they lick donkey balls..all i can say is "MTV EMO are bunch of clown rip-offs". im just standing my ground armed with my beliefs to stay true and focus on facts not fiction.

@buckstab - bro, im not a genre sadist/masochist disser...im not dissing any genre/bands here. im dissing the "LABELS" (emo, metal, hxc) which they wish to proclaim. They desecrate the true beliefs and discipline and feed you with lies. I repeat EMO is not about SLITTING WRISTS and SORRY BREAK UP songs.

@franzrebs - Im telling you again..arent you tired of these lines in every forum?..."IM SO EMO, I WANNA SLIT MY WRIST".."MY GF LEFT ME BECAUSE I COMMITTED ADULTERY AND NOW I AM EMO".."USO DIAY ANG EMO RON?, EMO NLANG SAD KO".."PAYTER LAGI NA ANG EMO NA CHIX, MAGEMO NLNAG SAD KO PARA MAPANSIN KO NIYA"..LOLX
Bro, clearly you are not a music enthusiast..sorry to say that bro..(end of our conversation)

BAN me if you want..I dont care...I will always stand for the truth armed with my beliefs to be true

    HxC PRIDE!

here is some brief history for you dudes and dudets:

After Minor Threat broke up in late 1983, the vibrant DC hardcore-punk scene that exploded in 1981 seems to start to run out of steam and fresh ideas within the established DC hardcore sound. The wistful, posthumous Minor Threat 7" "Salad Days" comes out in 1984 and drives the final nail into the coffin of DC hardcore punk. Bands all over the country begin casting about for new things to do : DRI and Bad Brains start going cheeze-metal, New York bands start doing tough-guy mosh, 7Seconds goes jangly U2 alternative, etc. The prevailing change in D.C. is toward melodic rock with punk sensibilities.

1984 marks the release of Zen Arcade by Minneapolis band Hüsker Dü, documenting their new mature sound combining furious, intense vocal delivery and driving guitars with slowed-down rockish tempos and more-complex, melodic songwriting.

In spring 1984, a new band called Rites Of Spring forms from members of The Untouchables/Faith and Deadline. This band retains a punk speed and frenzy, but brings a totally new vocal approach to the mix. Singer Guy Picciotto keeps an out-of-breath punk style most of the time, at times delving into intensely personal lyrics dripping with emotion and sweat. His voice breaks down at climactic moments into a throaty, gravelly, passionate moan.

The summer of 1985 becomes known as "Revolution Summer" when a new wave of rock-tempo, melody based, sung-vocal bands forms out of the DC punk musician pool with diverse rock sounds - Three, Gray Matter, Soulside, Ignition, Marginal Man, Fire Party, Rain, Shudder to Think, etc. Few bands retain the fast hardcore punk-based sound with the new vocal approach, Dag Nasty being the notable exception.

Minor Threat's singer, Ian MacKaye's, sings for a band called Embrace (compare the band name to earlier DC bands Minor Threat, Void, and State Of Alert) whose lyrics are emotional and deeply self-questioning, but still clear and unambiguous. Musically, the group (formed mostly of ex-Faith members) writes mid tempo, somewhat jangly music with a lot of pop guitar hooks. MacKaye's vocals retain his trademark bold enunciation, with only occasional sparks of emotive delivery.

These bands' sound eventually becomes known as the classic "D.C. sound." Some of it is derisively labeled "emo," as shorthand for "emotional." One account has this term first appearing in a Flipside interview with Ian MacKaye. Shortly thereafter DC bands acquire the tag "emo-core."

Slightly later (1986), some bands begin to focus on the "emo" element itself. The Hated in Annapolis (near D.C.) seem to be the first post-Rites of Spring to do this. Shortly thereafter, Moss Icon appears in in the same town. Moss Icon strips the "emo" element down to the core, and adds a great deal of intricate, arpeggiated guitar melody (by Tonie Joy, later of Born Against, Lava, Universal Order of Armageddon, etc.) with a strong focus on loud/soft dynamics. The vocals, too, break new ground by building up to actual top-of-the-lungs screaming at songs' climaxes.

Moss Icon, as a relatively well-known band that toured some, introduces the punk scene to music that has core emphasis on emotion instead of punk energy. As such, I consider them the starting point for the emo movement, not Rites of Spring as is more commonly asserted. Later emo bands draw heavily from the Moss Icon dynamics, guitar style, and vocal delivery.

Just want to share a "true" emo friend of mine's definition of emo:

lets hear it. its been passed around for too long. so many different understandings of what emo is. let me start

for me emo is a way of life. it is not an obligation though as any people decide on different ways to deal with their emotions. many resort to denial. many resort to diversion. but if you immerse yourself in your emotion. feed off it. live with it. that is emo. emotion is the counterpart of logic. emo is illogical. but it isnt stupid. just because any governing thought is absent doesnt mean that common sense is also absent. emo could be in the music. but music is only the medium of cultiviting these emotions. it only carries it further.

emo is not in the fashion. you can wear thick glasses and not be emo. you can have one sided hair and not be emo. you can wear girl jeans and not be emo. you may be mistaken as a nerd, uma fan, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (if youre short enough) or a fag. i totally hate these fashioncore kids who think emo is the s$$$. its not. go wear your chick jeans, black rimmed glasses and hair. thats ok. but if you associate yourself with emo, GTFO. people who are proud to be emo? PLEASE. EMO PRIDE DOES NOT EXIST.

emo is not in the music. now many will disagree with me here. but what if an rnb chick listens to the occational dashboard or tbs song. that doesnt make her emo. even if you listen to the real emo bands lke rites of spring, sunny day real estate and all their contempos, you still cant be emo. yeah you know them. but you dont feel em. you can just be a casual listener.

emo is not in the suicide attempts. its never cool. and its also not cool to fake it just to gain sympathy or attention. i think its a pretty lame idea to fake it. if you must fake it, just kill yourself for real because no one will ever take you seriously again.

emo is not something to be proud of. the point of being emotional is to SHY AWAY FROM EVERYONE ELSE. not to stand out. you can not be emo when you publicly show it. flaunt it. because emo is about regression. hiding if you may. take my analogy of hide and seek:

    emo: *hides*

emo poser: *hides* and says, hey eerybody... im hiding.

you guys dig? anyway, pardon my brief digression.

so what is emo then. where is it? how do i go "find emo" (s$$$ that is so corny)

answer. it is within. all of us have the propensity ro be emo. all of us have emotions. all of us feel sadness, anger, discontent, heartbreak, depression, and most of all, love. the only difference is, how you show it.

well, actually, you dont.. so there...

Highschool around 1996 ... I guess you're almost at the tail end of things.... and actually, I don't believe you got immersed in it `cause there never was an emo scene in the Philippines back then... and stuff released by indie labels were rarely available in the Philippines.. maybe except for Rough Trade records. Before I left Cebu for the States around 1994, I only saw a few Taang, Subpop, and Dischord "TAPES" ... and most of them were "pasalubong or pinadala". A friend of mine (Pee Wee Avenido) was the one who introduced me to this new sound (not emo) .. we were both coming from the same musical background so to say. During the 80's, we were both newwavers... although during the late 80's he was more into PUNK while I switched to Brit Pop stuff. Actually, he was the vocalist of the first ever punk band in Cebu (Abhorred).

Anyway. PeeWee introduced me to lots of new sounds around that time .. at least I call it new, knowing how limited we were back in the Philippines (about 1991-1992) and around that time, people were listening to Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Pee Wee introduced me to bands like Lush, My Bloody Valentine, Fugazi, Sebadoh, Sugar (and Husker Du - Bob Mould), Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Spinanes, Sloan, Posies, Eugenious, and Afghan Whigs, just to name a few. Of course, coming from newwave and brit pop, the new sound he introduced me was not far from the stuff I'm used to listening...

Honestly, I've only heard of the term "EMO" after I moved here... and around 1995 or 96, I went to my cousin's wedding in DC (yes, Washington DC). He asked me what music I was into... I mentioned some bands like the ones mentioned above. He then invited me to go to a show, he said that I would probably like EMO. So that was the first emo show I've been to. The music was okay.... their shows were somewhat kinda silly yet interesting. Musicians fumbling with their instruments and purposely playing the wrong notes while the vocalist rolls around the floor almost singing the whole show while lying on his back. That was my one and only first-hand emo experience.... at least a geniune emo experience.

    ----

By the way - my band's gonna be playing in DC this Saturday.

@ ezra - i have some copies of fugazi, rites of spring, orchid etc. in good ol tapes thanks to my cousin who by the way is a member of NYHC dms<==(a follow up to this " I don't believe you got immersed in it ", so dont treat me like im just new to the scene ), the fact is ive been into hxc while everybody was munching on grunge and numetal.. And no there was no emo scene in the phil. back then. And nobody knows about this new breed of positive HxC which now they call EMO. And no im definitely not EMO LOLx. Im more into the brutal side of HxC rather than the hibreeds..bands like sick of it all, circle jerks, Middle Class, Fear, xthrowdown, hatebreed, mudball, terror, black flag, danny diablo scene to name a few.

Emo was that way back then, vox rolling on the floor. Swinging mics. off tuned guitars but they never mention about SLITTING WRISTS and heart break lullabyes..You heard it yourself.

    and Gluck on your gig.

I'm not saying you're new to the scene .... it's just holier-year-than-thou bearing you have... the "I'm way better than you" type crap and the "I know more than you guys do" attitude that seems childish in a way. It's like posers don't deserve a glance from you or something.... and it bothers you too much that there's people like them that roams around the malls and such. It's kinda petty really if you think about it.

By the way... did your cousin cry when CBGB closed a few weeks ago? I played there several times (I'm bragging now) ....

Oh, ask your cousin if he knows a RENRICK PASCUAL ... he's a pinoy old school punk who hangs at CBGBs and is actually friends with Hilly Kristal ... a good buddy of mine, books me gigs in CB's.
