    Default Kenshin Himura Live Action

“Rurouni Kenshin” to get film adaptation starring Sato Takeru!

Back in July 2010, tokyohive mentioned rumor that Watsuki Nobuhiro’s popular manga, “Rurouni Kenshin -Meiji Kenkaku Romantan-” would get a movie adaptation, and that Sato Takeru would be playing the main character, ‘Himura Kenshin’. As it turns out, it wasn’t a rumor after all!

On June 28th, it was confirmed that a live-action movie of ‘Rurouni Kenshin’ will be released in 2012, and it will indeed star Sato Takeru. Otomo Keishi (the chief director of “Ryomaden“) will direct the movie, and the production company will be Warner Brothers.

“Rurouni Kenshin” was serialized through “Weekly Shonen Jump” during 1994 ~ 1999, and it was translated in 23 countries all over the world. It tells the story of Himura Kenshin, who was known and feared as the assassin “Hitokiri Battousai”; he starts a personal journey as a wanderer after the Meiji Restoration, pledging that he would do “no more killing“. The manga follows Kenshin as he tries to adjust to a new era, making encounters with many people and fighting his old enemies. Its highly-popular anime series was aired during 1996 ~ 1999.

Sato, who is currently practicing for a sword battle, commented, “The role of Kenshin is that of a well-known character, therefore, I think fascinating acting is needed. I would like to create the Kenshin image with the staff, while staying true to the details. I will try my best, so please look forward to it.”

The author of Rurouni Kenshin commented on Sato’s casting for the role: “When this project just started, my wife and I were talking about who would suit the role of Kenshin, and Sato Takeru-san was the one who came up on our mind first. So, when it was confirmed (that Sato will be taking the role), I was surprised, but was also very happy. I’m looking forward to see his wonderful acting.”

Other cast members for the movie will be revealed later, and the film is scheduled to hit theatres in 2012.

There’s still hope for the anime this year... at least that’s what some of the fans are speculating based on these ‘signs’:

RRK TV is currently re-aired on Tokyo MX, which started on spring 2011. They’re not re-airing the whole TV series, just selected episodes.
Instead of going to 95 over the next 3 months, they've instead decided to end with a strong focus on the Kyoto arc.
This supports the theory that the new Kenshin anime work will be a true final season along the lines of the Jinchuu Arc or some new Watsuki canon arc to end the series properly. It aligns them nicely with the with start of Fall 2011 season in October, as well as the final Blu-ray release on 10/26. If this potentially upcoming tweet announces something different, I'd be surprised.
More details of the new anime are said to be announced on August 20.

Some interesting things to ponder on are the seiyuu and music. It’s been more than 10 years already, so there might be a change in the cast. RRK also had the best opening and ending themes ever. Nostalgia plays a big part in appreciating this new anime, so I think it would be best if they provide the same 90s sound RRK fans loved.

There’s also the art style. Watsuki’s style has changed over the years. Four years ago, I didn’t even immediately realize Busou Renkin was Watsuki’s work. Though art style wouldn’t be a big issue since the studio responsible will try to bring the same art style the original RRK TV had. I haven’t verified it from any source, but I heard studio DEEN will be again working on the animation for the new RRK anime.

Some fans are also wondering if the new RRK anime will get the same treatment FMA and HxH had (reboot). But I think their decision to re-air the TV series negates this idea.

To those who are still not aware, RRK is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.
