Did I say that killing another homo sapien is part of our instinct? I merely disagreed with petite fleur when she unnecessarily labelled herself as "evil". I thought she shouldn't put such adjective on herself. What I think she's referring to are perhaps personal acts of selfishness or greed...these, I think, are hardwired in us, but we can learn to rise above them. Don't you think selfishness and greed are inherited instincts?

I agree with this. By being intolerant and disrespectful to other views/beliefs, fundamentalists actually spread hatred, anger and even terrorism - the key attributes of evil.

Take note, there are also anti-GOD fundamentalists. Mao ni silang mga tawhana nga gustong ipa-exterminate ang mga religious. I guess this thread is created by one of them.

In my own opinion, It was man who made evil things as what they want to portray since they had to push there agendas to be in front of the crowd......

When you study why people kill, you look for their motivations in doing so. It could be, among others, the ff:

    1) self-defense
    2) desperation
    3) crimes of passion
    4) war
    5) hatred
    6) religious fanaticism
    7) ideological fanaticism
8 ) psychopathic state of mind
    9) intoxicated (rage, drugs) state of mind

...you can put in more to this list. But here's how I'll categorize them:

#1 to #3, I think you will agree, are instincts

#8 and #9 are situations where one is not in control of his mind

#4 to #7 stem from tribalism...people driven by fanatical concepts of superior race, superior ideology, superior religion, etc...the us-and-them mentality: those who don't belong are inferior and are therefore less of a human being. I think these are ideas human beings derive from irrationality and superstition. And that is the battle where reason must win, if the human race is to thrive and prosper.

    @TS.

Let us not say the word God if you don't want it, but it's simple, very very simple to understand that there's no "CREATION IF THERE'S NO CREATOR".

Yes you didn't say that, because that is my question to you. as what she have said that "evil" is a STATE OF MIND, same as selfishness or greed. I think what we inherited from our ancestors is the ability to manifest our selfishness, greed and evilness as a homo sapiens. yet we have our freewill that is for sure was hardwired within us..

Before I respond, I'd like to know what you think about my last post. Thanks.

First, selfishness and greed, in moderation, are what drive the free exchange of goods and services. That's how the market system works, and it's indifferent to whether or not the motivations people have while participating in it are good or bad. These two instincts have adaptive value in our ancestors. And through our long history as social mammals, we learned to recognize the lesson of moderation.

Evilness...I think...is a consequence of irrationality and tribalism. It's these two (irrationality and tribalism) that's hardwired in us. I want to make that distinction at the outset, because I would not say that evilness is hardwired in us directly. And, yes, we learned to rise above these basic instincts (no pun intended), such that we are able to recognize them as something we should control in order to avoid doing evil deeds.

Is free-will hardwired in us? This is a philosophical question which will bring us to a philosophical debate between determinism and compatibilism. Perhaps you can start another thread on this.

Regarding good and evil, I always feel like quoting the Nobel-prize winning physicist Steven Weinberg:

With or without religion, you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion.
In my view, this quotation is true.
