Yes, what the observers are "seeing" currently (in terms of radio/xray wavelengths, maybe even visible spectrum) is something which happened around 3,000 years ago. So right now, we don't even know the "current" state of this system, because the "current" light from that area hasn't reached us yet (will reach us 3,000 years from now).

so it's like seeing from the past.. hmm for all we know those two are already colliding..and will be merging in about 900,000 years! I wonder if they will ever test Einstein's theory by then... thanks Rods for the explaination.
