sinyalan, isnt Hwa rang do the art that Joo Bang Lee founded? ive read articles that the art is heavily influenced by hapkido. Was this the same art that the Hwarang warriors practiced long ago or this is the creation of Master Lee? ask lang ko kay na intriga man gud ko. ive seen one practice wid phil hwa rang do at SM and they looked great. lots of kicks, strikes, locks and even grappling.

sinyalan: how is Tae Soo Do related to Tang Soo Do?

2tdruid: if my brod's memory serves us right, the highest ranked hwarangdo practitioner here in the philippines is a very young master in his mid-30s or early 40's by now - he was 3rd dan in the early nineties - very unassuming, very humble but also very deadly (or so my instructor says )- i haven't met him personally but i have met some of the ranked practitioners there in manila - also in the early 90's - philosopy nila murag knighthood of Korea - fighting is more slanted towards streetfighting (headbutts, elbows, pulling of hair and the like) - they say that they train to fight with any weapons at hand - that is why some of them also studied kali/arnis/eskrima (some of them were also exposed to LSAI-LESKAS) - i think the most famous/infamous (depending on where your coming from) practitioner of this art was the late Mike Echanis - who was supposedly a mercenary with a track record of sorts - Echanis was taught the secrets of Hwarangdo knife-fighting - a flowery-like beautiful kata - unusual because he was a foreigner - his teacher taught him almost everything because Echanis was supposed to possess the spirit of an old Hwarang warrior or a reincarnation of one..

I think the chief instructor for phil hwarando now is albert del rosario, a student of jong bang lee. Tae joon lee, the son of the grand master also visited the philippines in the 90's. Suzie entrata, a tv host and cesar montano are former students of hwarangdo philippines...

Sakto ka Freeflyer. Dr. Joo Bang Lee was the founder. Actually it's the other way around - Hapkido from Hwa Rang Do. A big discussion was overlayered but I wouldn't argue who's the first as long as I learned what I have to learn. I left 'Pinas when I was a colored belt (yuk kub - 6th grade). Several years ago.

Tang Soo Do is not related to Tae Soo Do. Tang Soo Do was influenced from Karatedo and makita nimo ang similarities sa ilang forms - look like katas. Where as Tae Soo Do was also ripped from Hapkido philosophies. But your summation LW is great. Mr. Echanis was believed to be the reincarnation of Sung Gae Lee - mao na ang ilang pagtu-o about ni Mr. Echanis. Mao pud nga dali kaayo nako makuha ang ilang tiknik kay duna na man kuy background sa kali. Though never had it exchanged my knowledge to them - because I have not asked to do it... maayo ra pud.

sinyalan: hehehehe pinoy jud gihapon ka. anyway, i have so much respect for hwarang do. for me the hwarang spirit epitomizes the Korean Culture. look at where Korea is now. it talks about their indomitable spirit. we filipinos should take this as eye opener. we have a rich culture, the only problem is we cant put our acts together. daghan maayong laki. daghan ngilngig. so its time to leave ego where it belongs, in the trashcan.

by the way, since we are about FMA here, let me also remind everybody that there are martial arts aside from eskrima, arnis and kali that should be preserved as well. one of this is Sikaran. im presently in touch with the Banaag family of Baras, Rizal. hopefuly, i cud start my education in Sikaran this december.

    Peace
