From what I've experience with carbed cars:

Gas spitting out the intake = intake manifold leak

So it should be similar to what happens in carb fed motorbikes. Try to check for cracks / tears / holes in the intake manifold just after the carb. Or try to put sealant on part where the intake manifold joins with the carb and the engine block just to get a good seal.
