Be there for them: promote courage, hope, and faith. Show sympathy and love. Try to get them to open up and talk about their problems. Be patient with them.
For me when I was depressed, just talking to others and finding out that human beings are generally nice and aren't out to get you. I had a stranger talk to me for 3 hours on New Year's Eve after midnight when I had come to the realization of a devastating situation for me. I found out who were my true friends, and I made new friends.
People are different and there are different severities of depression. I would offer myself to them as a friend and if it persisted, I'd ask them if they might consider professional help.

hand him/her a cold bottle of beer, then imply, "life stinks. make it stink even more by waking up in a pool of your own puke. later on, in your shower, you'll realize a lot more people are having problems twice as heavy as yours. think about it. at least there's someone who's handing you a beer."
